Located an hour north of Tampa, Weeki Wachee Springs was one of Florida's first tourist attractions when it opened it 1947 and was famous for its "live mermaids." A specially-designed underwater theater was built to allow visitors to watch the mermaids perform. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020 and continues to operate as a state park. #WyrdWednesday

When I think of my home state, it isn't beaches and theme parks that come to mind. It's this vibrant, swampy, Old Florida scenery.

It's cypress trees draped in spanish moss. It's thickets of palmettos and the sound of wailing limpkins, with the occasional splash of a jumping fish or startled alligator.

And it's absolutely these kinda endless reflections of blue sky and columns of cumulus clouds across muddy waters, naturally fed by the aquifer and a wealth of underground springs.

This one system of lakes and winding canals is home to tons of wildlife, including 367 unique species of birds alone. This is the native swampland we need to protect from big agriculture and over development.
