Mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis have retained ancestrally acquired genes for the biosynthesis of chemically diverse terpene nucleosides
Mycobacterium tuberculosis releases 1-tuberculosinyladenosine to block lysosomal function and promote survival in human macrophages. This study identifies over 100 such terpene nucleoside metabolites, revealing how ancestral M. tuberculosis complex bacteria acquired the genes needed to make these unique bioactive lipids.
