@rasteri #MDA still being supported is something I do know, as I literally build @OS1337 with only MDA @ 80×25 terminal size.

  • I just assume that modern graphics automatically occupy both MDA & #VGA addresses and automaically switch between the modes when one gets turned on. Supporting MDA only as a compatibility option.

The question I have is whether #MSDOS-Style mixed mode is possible, i.e. some application writing their outputs to a #VGA framebuffer with a native MDA terminal being the primary output.

  • Sadly I don't have hardware to test this (I wish I had some - if I had the money I'd do a tiny486 build) but I guess this would necessitate like an MDA card (recreation) and a VGA card (with disabled MDA output or something), and nowadays anyone wanting an MDA-Style console uses serial tty interface anyway…

Finally decided to set up my NEC PowerMate VP75 on my desk. I originally was running #MSDOS 7.1 on it but I decided to upgrade it to #Win98SE for convenience sake.

In "Ignition" (1997) you drive what appears to be and feels like (but aren't necessarily) remote-controlled cars, viewed from above. 🧨

The tracks are colourful, sinuous, and feature various hazards like cliffs at the side of the road, crossing traffic, or falling rocks.

The trouble is that some of these hazards feel randomly unavoidable, as the steep viewing angle doesn't let you see very far ahead at all. Out of nowhere, you're crushed flat by a boulder. 🥞

Думаю, всем нам известно: ещё каких-то лет десять назад "компьютером для интернета" назывался очень бюджетный офисный ПК, тогда как теперь потребление ресурсов возросло настолько, что порой современный веб - чуть ли единственное, с чем не справляется тот или иной девайс. А как насчёт чего-то совсем старого? Можно ли выйти в сеть с компьютера тридцатилетней давности и остались ли ещё какие-то сайты, которые можно полноценно просматривать с такого ПК? I wonder what the most user-friendly 1980s command-line interface was.

#Commodore 8-bit machines had some extremely gnarly syntax for doing anything involving disk drives.

#Unix was and remains infamous for extremely non-obvious command and option names.

#MSDOS at least had reasonable-ish command names like COPY and ERASE, but option names have the same problem as Unix.

Was there anything friendlier?
