Schlein to Meloni in Parliament: “Tell him we won’t give up our bases to the US. Why doesn’t he do the same as Spain?”

“Mr. President, I placed the gavel. It’s not the case in the situation we’re in… those looking at us deserve a different spectacle, not a fight in the mud.” This is how Elly Schlein opened her statement following her vote declaration in the Chamber of Deputies after the Prime Minister’s communications ahead of the upcoming EU Council, as well as regarding the crisis in the Middle East.

Speaking of a call for unity “that arrived late,” Schlein urged Meloni to be more decisive regarding the Middle East. “She said she ‘doesn’t condemn or share’ and it took her 12 days to say that these attacks are outside the bounds of international law. Well, now say that you exclude, even if asked, authorization for the use of military bases in Italy to support Trump’s illegal attacks on Iran. She’s been contradictory. Spain has excluded any support, because you don’t do it? The context can change, but what doesn’t change is international law,” said the Democratic Party secretary, urging the government to have the “courage to tell even our most indispensable allies when they are wrong.”

In her remarks, the Democratic leader also asked to “know how you will support the economy from the consequences of this war. In addition to the damage from Trump’s trade war with tariffs, there are also the costs of your military actions. We proposed a mobile excise tax. We appreciated your openness, but you did nothing. And people in line for gasoline have already paid over two euros per liter and the shopping cart has risen by more than 20%. You’re always in time – she concluded – to approve the minimum wage.”
