This dewatered the increasingly-deep quarry pit, which eventually reached about 108m below local surface level.

The quarry ceased operation in 1970 and quickly flooded thereafter.

I'll pick just one photo from my latest trip into a north Wales deep slate mine this morning. This stunningly beautiful slate arch gives access to a level by passing under a tracked incline used to transport slate up to the surface. This is at roughly 350 feet below surface.

A #northwales slate quarry drainage adit, 1.7km long. Fancy being down here? You lose sight of the entrance at around 500m. In dry weather, the water's only a foot or so deep, but in heavy rain, can nearly reach the roof. The echo is spectacular!
