Bobbing Boat doesn't tell the whole story of #UK #canal #boat #licencing. It's not just length, there are different rates for private boats and hire boats. And I forget the arrangements for continuously cruising #liveaboard #boaters.

I recall that the boats I owned a 1/12th shared in were classed as a #hireboat, although, typically, such boats cruised for about 48 weeks a year, while a typical holiday hire boat only cruises about 36 weeks a year, which is why I can understand the thought that length should not be the sole criteria.

It's different again on the #NorfolkBroads. Licencing is on the basis of area (length x beam) and there are multiple classes with the biggest discounts for #yachts, smaller ones for auxiliary yachts, electric powered craft and so on. Not to mention different rates for hire boats.

And just don't ask about the UK's Boat Safety Scheme! #BSS

Interesting to see two people go on record in the article as using university contacts or access made possible by their studies to access paywalled articles they need for their work/internships. There’s a good chance this violates their licence agreements, especially in case of the journalist. With internships, permitted uses are less clear-cut. (I know everyone does this.)

Is anybody buying the lifetime cloud solutions? I have MAJOR trust issues with any lifetime licence offers, but some clouds have a really nice value (like three years price for a "lifetime" access).

I can see the backlash around AI continuing to grow with a new licensing protocol that *should* force AI crawlers and bots to pay compensation to use content. This could easily burst the AI bubble!

Oh great, yet another company to go to shitty "cloud licencing": https://www.citrix.com/blogs/2025/09/08/elevating-your-citrix-experience-innovation-efficiency-and-the-future-of-licensing

Hey fedi, I'm considering making the EUPL v1.2 my default software license, anybody have a good reason why I shouldn't?

Note, I am only interested in copyleft licenses, so I'm not even considering things like Apache or MIT, but I'll gladly hear about problems it has that other copyleft licenses don't.

Well, here’s another app I am removing from all my devices. “Termius” seemed like a very good ssh client for iOS devices. Had lots of good features, was relatively stable.

But their licensing is batshit. $10/mo for a HOBBIEST license. Forever. Never ending. For a fucking terminal program.

Eat shit guys. The company I work for has a staggeringly complex pair of programs that are the top tools in the industry, and they license THOSE for $10/mo.
