Two years ago, after a snowstorm. I wasn’t out to take photos—just exploring. Then the clouds dropped below me, the sky cleared, and Mont Blanc stood still under a single lenticular cloud. The last light of sunset painted the peaks in soft pink and purple. I had my camera in the pack… and I’m glad I did.

Spotted over New Zealand’s South Island, a stunning ‘UFO cloud’ called the ‘Taieri Pet’ always reappears in the same spot. This elongated altocumulus standing lenticular cloud (ASLC) forms when winds meet the mountains, creating atmospheric waves that cool and condense water vapor into its mesmerizing shape.
