Last summer I posted my car coming back from the body shop with a new paint job. My excitement was soon gone when I began to notice parts here and there were missing. Lots of parts. Big things and little things. Mirrors. trim. Even the spare tire. I was too crushed to even look at it, but I have finally gotten around to putting it back together. Today, the metal trim that wraps around the license plate light assembly. And the clips. Who knew there were clips? #aircooled #volkswagen #karmannghia

Coming from the west coast of the US, where vintage #VW are fairly common I was surprised that in the Netherlands, where I currently live, they’re quite rare.

I’ve always had a soft spot for #KarmannGhia , but had never seen one here. Until now. Breathtakingly beautiful condition, I was literally stopped in my tracks, looping back to get a closer look.

Ironically, while pristine outside, it was carelessly strewn with things inside. Somehow I like the lack of precisousness 😁

@chromblitzen, @slirt: Definitely, yes. And not that uncommon as it seems: When he was young, my father had a #KarmannGhia with an added fake nose grill from some #AlfaRomeo. He told me that people were often thinking that it's a sports car. So, even if it feels like #sacrilege, it is a contemporary "tuning" part and hence shouldn't be an issue getting e.g. an oldtimer license plate.

@chromblitzen Turns out that my neighbor is attempting to get rid of his Karmann Ghia, after decades of storage under a cover. Also a Volvo P1800 with a similar history. 😳

Stored in SoCal, both have been somewhat preserved from the elements under their covers, but years of abandonment still means that there must be some deterioration, one assumes, so not projects for the faint of heart. 😬

Wish I could find a happy new home for both.
