Today, we’re at the other end of the original Volkswagen Beetle’s evolutionary scale from yesterday’s early ‘Brezelkäfer’. This late cabriolet version built by coachbuilders Karmann incorporates decades of upgrades and modifications compared with the Brezelkäfer and there are probably few if any parts that are interchangeable between the two. One of the best known examples of an affordable 1960s coupé was the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, which was based on the Beetle. Karmann, a coachbuilding company based in Osnabrück, was acquired by Volkswagen in 2010, but sadly car production at the former Karmann site is set to end in 2027. I saw this one at Techno Classica in Essen in 2014.
Today, a sixth and final branch of the BMW family tree that originated with the 1962 Neue Klasse saloon. This is the 2000 CS coupé version of the Neue Klasse, introduced in 1965. These were built by the coach-builder Karmann in Osnabrück rather than in house. One of my favourites, especially the unusual headlamp design. Snapped at Techno Classica Essen in 2013.

Die Wilhelm Karmann GmbH (1901-2010) war ein Automobil- und Karosseriebauunternehmen im niedersächsischen #Osnabrück. #Karmann fertigte Fahrzeuge, insbesondere Cabriolets und Coupés, auf Plattformen seiner Auftraggeber. Verbreitete Modelle waren der VW Karmann-Ghia und das Cabriolet auf Basis des VW Käfers. Insgesamt wurden rund drei Millionen Fahrzeuge gefertigt.
