My cousin Philip Ng told me to check out an #exhibit of his #film Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In and that it had a life-size figure of him. A couple weeks ago I did, and look what/who's the very first thing you see when you enter. 😂 Phil's was the only character featured like this, and people were posing with him—wild. #Immersive #exhibition at Airside (a new #mall designed by #architecture firm Snøhetta) in Kai Tak (where the old airport used

Rich crowd threatens to derail Bum Bum Train

Some of the volunteers who work for nothing on the show are said to be unhappy at the presence of high rollers in the audience

Yesterday, I discussed why #immersive art and entertainment experiences can fail; today, as a follow up, let's discuss the ones that do succeed and why.

In our survey of immersive practitioners, we said, “Think of your most successful [immersive] show or project. What makes this one stand out? What went right?”

The most commonly cited factors in a project’s success included making smart creative choices (especially around the experience's name, concept, or theme), getting audience buzz, having strong partnerships with venues or presenting partners or clients, designing a high quality product, good budgeting practices, and effective marketing.

Several respondents also mentioned having enough runway and resources to find the right audience or build that audience over time with a strong concept as contributing factors to their most successful project.

"Rather than pitting industry champions against sad stories, which only would serve to unnecessarily divide the industry into binary 'success' and 'failure' buckets, a greater opportunity here is to examine one of the most interesting categories within this industry: #immersive experiences that have been critically and/or publicly acclaimed and won industry awards, and yet still stumbled in the long term."

#Immersive art and entertainment experiences can fail for a number of reasons, often intertwined: a bad business model, misconceptions of the experience by the public, an unexpected rent hike, poor execution of an idea, loss of a project's internal champion, and much, much more.

Some of these factors are outside the control of creative teams (like pandemics and other acts of God) but what about the factors practitioners can try to control?

In our survey of immersive practitioners, we asked “Think of a show or project in which you lost money or failed to break even; in your opinion, what went wrong?”

The most commonly cited reasons for a project failing to break even or losing money included poor marketing or lack of marketing, poor budgeting practices, lack of audience interest which resulted in lackluster ticket sales, poor project management practices, and a badly fitting business model.
