ROY HARPER
Stormcock
1971 UK pressing
Hats off to Roy Harper!
It’s hard to believe nobody really gave a shit about this when it came out.
Harvest absolutely loathed it.
It’s that age old story of “no singles, can’t sell it”.
Harvest claimed there was no money to promote it, but it’s 1971, and they were Harvest, so that’s clearly bullshit.
It’s 2026 now, and we’ve known for a very long time how fucking brilliant it is. It’s by far Harper’s best album, and it’s even got a guest guitar solo on it from Jimmy Page (of course it does).
Johnny Marr of The Smiths cites this as a favorite of his, and calls it “Hunky Dory’s bigger, badder brother.”
High (and much deserved) praise.
Just a mind blowing early #70s masterpiece.

Finally got my old Pioneer stereo set up! This actually used to belong to my dad; he took it to college with him. I did the same thing, but when I moved to Colorado it sat in storage for over a decade.
Pioneer TX-9100, SA-9100, and CT-F9191.
Now it's back with me in Colorado! Clearly needs some work (right channel cuts in and out a bit, and when audio does come through it's quieter than the left channel). Also could stand to be cleaned, I need some RCA cables to hook the tape deck and receiver up, and I'm missing 9 switch knobs (if anyone knows where to find these for non-insane prices, please let me know).
Super nostalgic for me! I learned a lot of audio theory on this setup when I was a kid.

A little acid-ridden #psychedelic #progressive #artrock to get my morning going.
The band’s ONLY album; not overly intricate, but pretty melodic sounding and introspective.
I found this at a flea market in Seattle, Wa. when I took my son there for a concert. I grabbed it because I had never heard of them before and looked pretty interesting.
I didn’t realize it was kind of sought after.
“Lacewing” is the true gem here. Just a great tune. A beautiful little Beatles-esque #acidfolk number.
Odd thing about this band:
They don’t sound like they’re from NYC.
They sound a lot like the British bands of the time, and their singer James “Spider” Barborous actually slips in and out of an English accent occasionally.
Apparently there’s a promo MONO copy that sounds infinitely better, as this one’s a little thin on bass.
Great record, regardless.
