Gboard definitely has a better spelling correction engine.

But #Heliboard is 99% as good*, and totally #FOSS.

*Especially if you install the proprietary glide typing extension, which of course, they're working on a FOSS replacement of, but it will take a while

#Heliboard gesture data project's first batch has been run through the arcane scripts I wrote.

I only had to discard <1% of the gestures; those were duplicates. No obviously fake data!

269,845 gestures, 500+ contributors.

Only ~60% of the gestures are some form of English.

The other most common languages are:
German
Polish
French
Russian
Arabic
Swedish
Italian

There are other languages, with fewer than 1000 gestures, but I don't know their codes by heart... I will map those later!

Anyone commonly type any multi-codepoint symbols in #heliboard?

It seems an unavoidable combinatorial problem. Imagine I have a key "t" and a key "th" on my layout. (Yes heliboard can do this, see image...) This creates a problem; consider how we build the template to compare the gesture against for "thither".

Is it:
t-h-i-t-h-e-r
th-i-t-h-e-r
t-h-i-th-e-r
or
th-i-th-e-r
?

The current library will ignore "th", but I suspect this is confusing in some languages. Only using "th" seems worse.

@tay it took me a long time to move away from gboard because I could never find another keyboard that did swipe typing as good, but I've been using #heliboard for quite a while now and find it to be very good. Might be worth a look if you haven't tried it yet. Open source and privacy focused.

Just switched my keyboard on my phone to an OSS one. I don't know why it took me so long to realize you don't NEED to use big tech keyboards. I found HeliBoard on F-Droid, looks like an AOSP based keyboard, without any internet permissions. Way snappier than Swiftkey was.
