Phrack – Darknet Diaries

Phrack is legendary. It is the oldest, and arguably the most prestigious, underground hacking magazine in the world. It started in 1985 and is still running today. In this episode we interview the Phrack staff to hear some stories about what it's like running a hacker magazine for 40 years.

Curiosity isn’t rebellion.
For some people, it’s survival.

I wrote a Field Note inspired by the Hacker Manifesto, 40 years later.

Conscience of a Hacker aka The Hacker Manifesto turns 40

The Conscience of a Hacker, also known as The Hacker Manifesto, turned 40 yesterday. If there was a document that shaped entire generations of Hackers, the Hacker Manifesto would be this document. The manifesto was first published in Phrack Volume One, Issue 7, Phile 3 of 10. The full text of the post is below:

Another one got caught today, it’s all over the papers. “Teenager
Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal”, “Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering”…
Damn kids. They’re all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950’s technobrain,
ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what
made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?
I am a hacker, enter my world…
Mine is a world that begins with school… I’m smarter than most of
the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me…
Damn underachiever. They’re all alike.

I’m in junior high or high school. I’ve listened to teachers explain
for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. “No, Ms.
Smith, I didn’t show my work. I did it in my head…”
Damn kid. Probably copied it. They’re all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is
cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it’s because I
screwed it up. Not because it doesn’t like me…
Or feels threatened by me…
Or thinks I’m a smart ass…
Or doesn’t like teaching and shouldn’t be here…
Damn kid. All he does is play games. They’re all alike.

And then it happened… a door opened to a world… rushing through
the phone line like heroin through an addict’s veins, an electronic pulse is
sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought… a board is
found.
“This is it… this is where I belong…”
I know everyone here… even if I’ve never met them, never talked to
them, may never hear from them again… I know you all…
Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They’re all alike…

You bet your ass we’re all alike… we’ve been spoon-fed baby food at
school when we hungered for steak… the bits of meat that you did let slip
through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We’ve been dominated by sadists, or
ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will-
ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now… the world of the electron and the switch, the
beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying
for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn’t run by profiteering gluttons, and
you call us criminals. We explore… and you call us criminals. We seek
after knowledge… and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color,
without nationality, without religious bias… and you call us criminals.
You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us
and try to make us believe it’s for our own good, yet we’re the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is
that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.
My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me
for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual,
but you can’t stop us all… after all, we’re all alike.

It was a significant force in shaping how I thought about computers and why I went into Computer Security. I first read the manifesto in late 1997 after I got my first computer and became active on the Internet and various BBS forums. Sadly I don’t remember the exact site where I found it but I can tell you it had a profound impact on me. I have always been a person who wanted to know how things work and why things were a particular way. In fact my parents actually went out and bought a series of books called “Tell me Why?” to answer my questions.

Then I found this post that put into words things I was just starting to work out and put them in plain and simple terms. To proudly say that wanting knowledge is not a bad thing, neither is wanting to know how things work and why they are done in a particular way. I still follow the same basic agenda/rule in all my work and it has helped me immensely.

My crime is that of curiosity” resonates even more powerfully in an age of locked-down devices and walled gardens. The Hacker Manifesto turns 40 today—and still speaks truth.

Island in the Net

Listening to this sweeping talk by @pluralistic I can't help but see parallels to the #HackerManifesto

There's a glimpse at a different #DigitalWorld in addition to a thorough criticism of current trends.

"A post-American Internet"? The talk shows that the #Internet and #Cyberspace are far from elusive, untouchable realms but instead are very real in terms of #Power. The digital world is very much shaped by the US which for years has unsettled other states and puts further strain on the #Multistakeholder approach, which in the words of Milton Mueller was enacted specifically to make sure, no one government would dictate the rules of the Internet.

Really interesting is the observation, that we might be at a tipping point for #DigitalGovernance. A new coalition emerges thanks to #Trump, bringing together such different groups as Digital activists and national security hawks for #DigitalSovereignty

The talk is a great illustration of the importance of #TechGeopolitics and picking up many themes I've also addressed in my newsletter like #TechDebt. Subscribe here: https://explore.ghost.org/p/nicolas-zahn

Manifest Hacker

Manifest Hacker

Estic a l’institut. Ho entenc. “No, senyoreta Smith, no he fet els càlculs en paper. Ho he fet de cap…”
Maleït nano. Segur que ho ha copiat. Són tots iguals.

Avui he fet un descobriment. He trobat un ordinador. Un moment… això és increïble. Fa el que li dic. Si s’equivoca, és perquè m’he equivocat jo, no perquè no m’agradi…
Ni perquè se senti amenaçat per mi…
Ni perquè em trobi impertinent…
Ni perquè odïi ensenyar i no hauria d’estar aquí…
Maleït nano. Només juga a videojocs.

Explorem… i ens dieu criminals. Cerquem coneixement… i ens dieu criminals.
