Scontro frontale tra Paolo Mieli e Marco Travaglio negli studi di Otto e mezzo, il talk show di Lilli Gruber in onda su La7. Al centro del confronto della puntata di lunedì 2 marzo, il tema delle responsabilità politiche e militari in Medio Oriente, con un passaggio particolarmente acceso sulle giustificazioni addotte per le azioni di guerra in Iran di Usa e Israele e le relative conseguenze civili. A innescare la miccia è Mieli, che prova a ricostruire — a suo dire senza giustificarle — le motivazioni dichiarate da una delle parti in conflitto: "Se noi troviamo giustificazione in queste cose qua, dobbiamo trovare una forma di pietas anche per quei 30.000 morti fatti da Ali Khamenei. E credo che, siccome Donald Trump aveva annunciato che li avrebbe vendicati, avrebbe fatto qualcosa per dare soddisfazione a questo popolo che ha subito 30.000 morti, uno dei motivi è di non fare anche una figuraccia. Ne ha ammazzati qualcuno, lui".
"Parole che fanno immediatamente insorgere Travaglio, che ribatte con toni durissimi: "Per dargli soddisfazione ha sterminato delle bambine in una scuola, ha sterminato la gente in un ospedale, è così che li liberiamo? Ma io sono basito". Il confronto si accende ulteriormente quando Mieli precisa la propria posizione, respingendo l'accusa di voler legittimare quelle azioni: "No, ma non lo sto giustificando, scusate, io sto dicendo qual è la loro motivazione. A volte loro giustificano queste cose in maniera impropria, è che non è così che la penso, è quello che dicono". Un duello in piena regola, con tanto di sguardo sbigottito di Travaglio per le parole del suo interlocutore.

And I believe that, since Donald Trump had announced that he would avenge them, he would do something to satisfy this people who suffered 30,000 deaths, one of the reasons is to avoid a humiliating defeat. He killed some of them.”
“Words that immediately provoked Travaglio, who responded with harsh tones: “To satisfy them, he slaughtered children in a school, he slaughtered people in a hospital, that’s how we liberate them? But I’m dumbfounded.” The confrontation intensified when Mieli clarified his position, rejecting the accusation of wanting to legitimize those actions: “No, but I’m not justifying them, excuse me, I’m saying what their motivation is. Sometimes they justify these things incorrectly, it’s not how I think about it, it’s what they say.” A full-blown duel, complete with Travaglio’s bewildered gaze at his interlocutor’s words.
