One of my garlic types I planted - Spanish Rojo, is listed in the book. It says "weak ... (sometimes doesn't grow)"

It is not up yet. 2 of my other types are all up, one other is emerging day by day. No sign of the Spanish Rojo yet.

It must have rained overnight. The garden beds are damp, as are things I potted up as gifts to other gardeners and a couple of pots I sowed with poppies yesterday. The rain droplets have gathered on the large nasturtium leaves and they sparkle in the first rays of the sun from behind the clouds.

There are about 10 beans on the 2 self-sown black-eyed pea/bean bushes (from my cold compost heap). They are so incredible. The bean pods start like very thin pencils reaching for the sky. As the beans develop inside the pods, weight and gravity eventually take over.

If I was eating them "green" (not dried) there are 2 pods that would be ready. But there are not enough to make a serving. I will remember to plant more next year. Meanwhile this year I am letting them dry on the bush and saving the beans inside for cooking at some point.

They make me very happy.

I have just picked the first makrut lime of the season and, with quinces and cumquats also ripening, my mind turns to the wide wide world of (Indian) pickles.

There are lots of mushrooms in the veg/fruit garden, but not the kind you want to make Beef Wellington with ๐Ÿ˜„ (IFKYK - Aussies do).

I like to do at least 1 task in the garden each day, to keep on top of it and to give me some fresh air and exercise. It can be quite small, or larger. Whatever needs doing.

I tried early in the afternoon but as soon as I was in the veg garden it poured with rain and I got rather wet ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ๐ŸŒง๏ธ (10mm rain today)

But later I managed about 45 mins to potter around, perhaps more. It certainly warms you up in this cold weather. A definite side benefit.

Lovely news #FromTheKitchen - I strained off the infusing pomegranate vinegar this afternoon, and it is a gorgeous pomegranate colour ๐Ÿ˜„ Can't wait to use it.

Also, #FromTheFermentationBench the vinegars (one jar apple and one quince) and the 2 beetroot and apple kvass jars are all bubbling nicely despite the cold weather.

I checked the 2 chickpea misos (one at 5 weeks, the other [this one had some live miso incorporated to help fermentation] at 3 week). Both seem to be doing well. Some tamari on each. Perhaps both could have had more weight. I really noticed the lovely miso aroma from the 5 week one.

And #FromTheGarden - I picked one of the mini mini finger limes as it was wanting to come off the tree. It is so miniature but it is the first year with fruit and it did its best.

In good news #FromTheGarden, the garlic in the second half of the bed is starting to emerge. What a relief! And a wonderful present from the garden on this special day.

The broad beans are not up yet. The seeds might have been past their prime (I am using up all the seeds I have before buying more.) I'll throw some more in if they are not up by the weekend.

A patch of sunshine late in the afternoon. The garden has warm musty earth smells, as it should. I fossicked around in the mulch on the garlic bed and found a garlic poking through. They will grow, in their own time.

#FromTheGarden this morning. The next instalment of news on the Lemon Verbena

๐ŸŒฟ I've been using the stump of the LV to wiggle the soil and roots loose from the pot a little each day. It was hanging on, but with the pot on its side most of the water had drained out.

Today I got the root ball and soil out. The root that had grown through the hole in the bottom of the pot had grown until it sealed the pot. No drainage any more. Wet feet. Curled up and died.

The cause is solved. I may try to regrow a plant from part of the stump but I think it is a lost cause. I struck some cuttings tho, so ๐Ÿคž I'd like to continue this plant somehow, even tho I have a second LV bush in the garden.

The gentlest of drizzles. Weeding in the veggie garden. Picking a strawberry and some spring onions. The strawberry flavour is intense and it is pure luxury.

Sad news #FromTheGarden

The lemon verbena in flower that I posted a few days ago dried up almost overnight. It was a shock - so tall this year, over 2m. Beautiful, graceful.

I watered it well when I saw it dried up (it has been in a pot for years and years and years). But today I had to give up and prune it down to the bottom. As I had begun to expect, it is root bound and not draining. It had been so lush I could not see the pot until I pruned it.

I'll pull it out of the pot tomorrow, if I can, and see if it can be rescued. But despite being sad as I have had this plant for a long time, it is not a huge loss as I have another plant (in the ground) and I can take some cuttings from it.

Still, this one was such a beauty.
