@atomicpoet Remember #XMPP? #Google / #Alphabet and #Facebook / #Meta / #WhatsApp once did #EmbraceExtendExtinguish against it. #XMPP is still alive by the way but many #FreeSoftware clients lack the features of #WhatsApp, specially if used in #FSDG-compliant #mobile projects such as #Replicant, in which clients don't work well due to lack of #selfie / front camera and #OpenGL to show the other person. All thanks to unregulated technological progress.

#Android

@Datterich @nixCraft @GrapheneOS I don't know much about these distributions' freedom status, since their #GNU #FSDG evaluation wasn't posted (maybe because the distribution didn't send a formal request for evaluation?), but I would also like to add #Replicant, for more information on this, see https://replicant.us/

The #GNU #FSDG isn't just for distros with GNU, see http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-non-gnu-distros.html

Replicant

@nicemicro en: another one I heard, targeted against activists and distributions that follow the #GNU #FSDG is "this is oppression since you are blocking the installation of non-free software", which is false because they just don't… a) teach; b) install to others; c) recommend; d) foster; e) make it convenient. But, you can still install stuff manually. Blocking is actually a bug, like the one #LinuxLibre has, which is caused by how #Linux is made.
Trying to avoid #MELPA because it does not follow the #GNU #FSDG. Tempted to install #Guix for all #Emacs stuff.

Working on building a #LinuxLibre kernel for #MNTReform using #Guix ... and so far it boots!

Have not yet managed to build a kernel without the HDMI patches, which require a binary blob, so not in line with the #FSDG for inclusion into guix.

That said, it was not too difficult, using a few patches and .dts from https://source.mnt.re/reform/reform-debian-packages/-/tree/main/linux

Getting closer...

I came across this interesting article (https://libreboot.org/news/policy.html) by the #libreboot project about #LibreHardware or #FreeHardware regarding the shortcomings of the #RYF as well as the #FSDG and the uses of CPU #microcode.

Modern hardware is broken and unfortunately tradeoffs are needed, but also those criteria misunderstand a number of evolving technical details.

@resynth1943 #GNU #Guix is a similar project, with #NodeJS / #NPM importer built-in, with a community committed to follow the #GNU #FSDG for their official channels/repositories.
