È la sequenza ripresa in un video diventato virale che sta infiammando i social e la comunità di Lahaina, alle Hawaii. Secondo quanto ricostruito dalle autorità locali e dal “New York Post“, un turista 37enne di Seattle ha lanciato una grossa pietra contro “Lani”, una foca monaca hawaiana rigorosamente tutelata dalla legge federale, mentre nuotava a pochi metri da Front Street. Un gesto che ha scatenato l’indignazione istantanea dei presenti in spiaggia, culminata nella giustizia sommaria di un residente: nelle immagini si vede un uomo a torso nudo inseguire il turista, colpirlo alle spalle e abbatterlo con una serie di pugni. Un filmato che ha collezionato migliaia di visualizzazioni online, raccogliendo in larga parte gli elogi per l’intervento del locale.
Il caso finisce anche in Parlamento
L’episodio è arrivato anche nelle istituzioni locali. Il senatore dello Stato di Hawaii Brenton Awa ha parlato in aula del caso, mostrando una lettera di riconoscimento per l’uomo coinvolto nell’intervento. “Alcuni cittadini hanno deciso di intervenire per far capire cosa succede quando si mancano di rispetto la nostra terra e i nostri animali”, ha dichiarato, precisando però che la violenza non viene ufficialmente incoraggiata. Il turista è stato fermato per essere interrogato e successivamente rilasciato dopo aver richiesto assistenza legale. Non risultano al momento accuse formali, ma il caso è stato trasferito alle autorità federali per possibili violazioni delle leggi sulla protezione dei mammiferi marini.

Il sindaco di Maui Richard Bissen ha condannato l’episodio, sottolineando che “non è questo il tipo di visitatori che vogliamo accogliere” e ribadendo la necessità di rispetto verso ambiente e fauna locale. The case also ends in Parliament
The episode reached the local institutions. Senator of the State of Hawaii Brenton Awa spoke in the chamber about the case, presenting a letter of recognition to the man involved in the intervention. “Some citizens decided to intervene to make it clear what happens when we disrespect our land and our animals,” he stated, specifying that violence is not officially encouraged. The tourist was stopped to be questioned and subsequently released after requesting legal assistance. There are currently no formal charges, but the case has been transferred to federal authorities for possible violations of marine mammal protection laws.
