Tiny pitchers, big personality. My *Nepenthes ampullaria* is still young, but those little round buds are already full of promise. Unlike most Nepenthes, *N. ampullaria* is a detritivore at heart — its squat, flask-shaped pitchers are designed less for catching insects and more for collecting fallen leaf litter from the forest floor above. Nutrients from decomposing leaves, not bugs. Nature is endlessly creative. 🍂

This species is widespread across Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, and comes in a huge range of colour forms — from plain green to deep red and spotted "Harlequin" types. Can't wait to see which form this one turns out to be as it matures.

Kleine bekers, grote persoonlijkheid. Mijn *Nepenthes ampullaria* is nog jong, maar die kleine ronde knopjes zijn al veelbelovend. Anders dan de meeste Nepenthes is *N. ampullaria* van nature een detritivoor — haar gedrongen, fles­vormige bekers zijn minder bedoeld om insecten te vangen en meer om gevallen bladeren van de bosbodem te verzamelen. Voeding uit rottende bladeren in plaats van insecten. De natuur is eindeloos creatief. 🍂

Deze soort komt wijd verspreid voor op Borneo, Sumatra en het Maleisisch Schiereiland, en bestaat in een enorme variatie aan kleurvormen — van gewoon groen tot diep rood en gevlekte "Harlequin"-types. Ik ben benieuwd welke vorm dit exemplaar blijkt te zijn naarmate het groeit.

Remember that tiny red shoot I almost threw away? Look at it now. 🌿

The Calathea (*Calathea* sp.) that was barely clinging to life after winter has pushed out its first proper leaf — deep green, glossy, with those beautiful veins that make calatheas so recognisable. From one little rhizome bud to this. Worth the wait.

De Calathea (*Calathea* sp.) die na de winter nog maar op één draadje hing, heeft zijn eerste echt blad uitgeschoven — diepgroen, glanzend, met die prachtige nerven waar calathea's zo herkenbaar aan zijn. Van één klein rhizoomknopje naar dit. Het wachten was de moeite waard.

Sometimes a plant surprises you just before you give up on it.
My Calathea (Calathea sp.) looked completely dead after winter — all the leaves had dried up and I was ready to toss the pot. But before I did, I took one last look at the base... and there it was: a tiny deep-red new shoot, pushing up through the soil. That's all a plant needs to ask for a second chance.
Calatheas die back in cold conditions but can survive from their underground rhizomes. That vivid purple-red color in new growth is completely normal — it gradually turns green as the leaf unfurls and starts photosynthesizing.

Soms verrast een plant je net op het moment dat je de moed al had opgegeven.
Mijn Calathea (Calathea sp.) zag er na de winter volledig dood uit — alle bladeren waren verdroogd en ik stond op het punt de pot weg te doen. Maar ik nam toch nog één laatste kijkje bij de basis... en daar zat het: een klein, diepood groeipuntje dat zich een weg baande door de grond. Dat is alles wat een plant nodig heeft om een tweede kans te vragen.
Calathea's kunnen hun bovengrondse delen verliezen bij koude, maar overleven vanuit hun ondergrondse rhizomen. Die opvallende paarsrode kleur in nieuw blad is volledig normaal — ze worden groen naarmate het blad zich ontrolt en begint te fotosynthetiseren. 🌿
