Hey Arch-enjoyers, there's a thing that annoys me and I'm wondering if I'm being a derp and there's a better way to do it. If I install or update using `yay` and the process takes a long time, like when it has to build something from source, I'll go and do other important stuff like posting nonsense on the fediweb and then of course I'll forget to go back to the terminal window to put in my password at the end and the install will time out. I know you shouldn't run yay with sudo, but is there a way to pre-approve whatever it needs so it can just do its biz and finish?

Does anyone have resources or guides for making fedi front ends? I'm already using the Mastodon API docs, also planning on using Misskey API docs, but if there's any more generalistic resources (or step-by-step suggestions even for specific APIs) they would be much appreciated!

@remixtures

I need an open source program to allow me to search the pictures that I've saved on my hard drives. Once I have that, I'm deleting everything in Google Photos.

Any recommendations?

I'd like a program that could download my photos from Google Photos to my local hard drive AND allow me to search those local photos effectively. The only reason I haven't downloaded all my photos and told Google to go fuck itself is that I'd effectively LOSE lots of photos by being unable to search them locally!

I've used the free Antivir antivirus program for decades on my machines. It was effective for a long time, and I could put up with it's once-a-day ad for subscription.

But it's been getting a LOT pushier lately. I've already been through hell with McAfee back in the '80s (that's a different story), and I remember hating Norton. So...can anyone suggest a decent antivirus program for Windows? Preferably one that's open-source, free, and maybe part of the Fediverse if that's not insane?

So, I'm in need of some confirmation of how UEFI works. Apparently, I don't even need a bootloader, because my UEFI shell already has that capability to switch boot entries? So then, I'd I just need to create an /EFI/BOOT directory in the EFI system partition, (from what I see it's often mounted to /boot or /boot/efi in Linux) and make a directory for each entry, containing an .EFI executable, a kernel image (vmlinuz) and the initramfs?

If I'm not wrong so far, great. Now, how do EFI stubs work? If it's the kernel booting itself from UEFI, do I not need an .EFI executable? Do I just dump a stub-compatible vmlinuz kernel image in /EFI/BOOT ?

I'm thinking that my next cellphone might be a Fairphone. I've generally tried to shop wisely for phones, and mostly I've been quite successful. They generally last me at least five years each, often a year or two longer.

I go with as close to vanilla Android as much as possible, with high RAM and good specs - never top-tier phones, but solid mid-range phones. I don't buy from Samsung, because I have no interest in having crapware foisted on me or helping a corporation violate my privacy.

My current phone is a OnePlus 6T, which is still running solidly after nearly seven years. But Carl Pei left OnePlus some time ago, and OnePlus has apparently gone downhill as a result.

The Fairphone sounds appealing, but I'm concerned that I might have to switch carriers. Meanwhile my son is pulling for a Pixel; I'd rather avoid doing business directly with Google because they're so fucking evil.

So...suggestions? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Can anyone recommend some good open-source torrenting software I can use on a Windows 11 machine?
