Per the association’s bylaws, three members of the election committee act as independent trustees. To prevent two of them from colluding to cook the results, each trustee holds a third of the cryptographic key material needed to decrypt results.

“Unfortunately, one of the three trustees has irretrievably lost their private key, an honest but unfortunate human mistake, and therefore cannot compute their decryption share,” the IACR said. “As a result, Helios is unable to complete the decryption process, and it is technically impossible for us to obtain or verify the final outcome of this election.”

Keeping votes anonymous is actually one of the biggest (legitimate) obstacles to remote & verifiable electronic voting. If you put in place presumably benign tech where "I" can verify that my vote was registered, it also makes it possible for my spouse, my employer, my church to coerce me to prove what/who I voted for. Vote-selling becomes possible. Verifiable electronic voting would be pretty easy if it weren't for that problem.

Estava bem encaminhado até "politizarem" o problema e transformarem o "voto impresso" de "rastro impresso de auditoria" para "voto manual em papel sem urnas eletrônicas".

No mundo inteiro, urnas de modelo DRE, como as brasileiras, vem sendo eliminadas por não permitirem auditoria. Está na hora de nós também avançarmos nisso. Vejam esse exemplo de Porto Rico, onde o rastro de auditoria permitiu identificar um "bug" que gerava totalizações incorretas nas urnas.
