Measuring one thing to get to another value is how almost all measuring equipment works. At least those more complex than a tape measure.
•Hg thermometer: measure a length to get a tempelature
•Hg barometer: dto, pressure
•RR Lyra variables: measure a brightness and a duration to get a distance
Measuring a game score to get a degree of distraction is fine.
