The parallel between Proton's sponsorship of Vincent Lapierre and Framework's DHH/Omarchy sponsorship is striking.
What separates them is the response: Proton terminated the deal and acknowledged the misstep. Framework doubled down on "software first" neutrality while critics raised legitimate concerns about who they were financially backing.
Different outcomes, same underlying issue, companies claiming ethical stances need to vet partnerships consistently, not just reactively.
Man it's funny and really telling how #dhh is now spouting the "let AI democratize Open Source!" bullshit.
To me it shows that he completed his "evolution" into a middle manager. Heck, if you look at Rails contributions (https://github.com/rails/rails/graphs/contributors?from=31.05.2025), he's not even in the top 10 of contributors anymore.
I agree with Dave - the AI backlash does smack of preserving privileges of a chummy elite rather than making tech more accessible to all.
"as with so many social movements that purport to fight for freedom or equality, this AI backlash reeks of status games, envy, ... and ressentiment"

The open source movement spent decades fighting for everyone's right to change software, through free access to code and permissive licenses to release improvements. But at the dawn of the AI revolution, as this mission is finally being broadly fulfilled, it's clear that "everyone" never actually meant everyone to some. See, all progra...
just had to remind another person that framework supports facist projects

Framework recently sponsored and advertised Hyprland and Omarchy, two fairly unremarkable projects unrelated except for the fact that they are led by hateful and (at least in Omarchyโs case) fascist tech bros. See also this thread for everyone voicing their disappointment. I am still hopeful that the company will change course on this, but Niravโs recent tweet suggests he doesnโt really care. Thatโs unacceptable to me, so Iโm probably going to have to return my new Framework 16 in the next week...
