A Jerusalem court just sentenced journalist Bayan Al-Jaaba (also spelled Bayan Al-Juba, Bayan al-Jo'beh) to 20 months for Facebook posts and personal photos taken at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The charges: "incitement and support for a terrorist organization" - the standard legal machinery Israel uses to criminalize Palestinian journalism.

She was arrested in her final month of a high-risk pregnancy, released hours later, then placed under 15+ months of house arrest with a social media ban. She gave birth to her third child while confined, prohibited from using the very platforms she was convicted over.

Per #CPJ, Israel has killed 258 journalists since Oct 7, 2023 - more than any single conflict since CPJ began counting in 1992. At least 75 were classified as deliberate targeted killings. Another 108 journalists have been arrested. Israel is the world's second-worst jailer of journalists. The #ICC has issued arrest warrants for #Netanyahu and #Gallant. Not one Israeli soldier has ever been held accountable for killing a journalist.

In hindsight, her death seems like a menetekel and a perfidious test for the mass killing of journalists in the current war in Gaza.

#AbuAkleh was murdered while covering an (…) #IDF operation in the #WestBank town of Jenin on May 11, 2022, despite wearing a clearly marked press vest. Her killing is part of a wider pattern of journalist deaths by Israeli military fire in which no one has been held accountable.

#cpj numbers are lower than #wikipedia's because they don't count "Hamas-affiliated" media outlets (whose employees can be called "combatants" by #hasbara shills with impunity).
As part of my #EoB installation, I've hung 279 #MemorialNameTags for #reporters killed in #Gaza (since they were printed at the beginning of the #CeaseFire we're allegedly in now, the last dozen tags were hand written).

5 more have been killed since.

„The journalist, A. Shihab-Eldin (…) was arrested (…) while visiting Kuwait. His #detention, which was condemned by international rights groups, highlighted restrictions on media coverage in the Persian Gulf (…). The Committee to Protect Journalists described those charges as “vague & overly broad accusations that are routinely used to silence independent journalists.”

Regional Director Sara Qudah stated that a culture of impunity in #Gaza is fueling a similar pattern in #Lebanon and urged the international community to hold Israel accountable.
