The knockers of Cornish legends are either subterranean goblins or the ghosts of dead miners. Either way, they warn miners of danger and guide them to rich veins of tin if the miners throw the last pieces of their meat pasties down the mine shafts as offerings to the knockers.

According to Cornish folklore, a Padstow man once shot a mermaid for rejecting his unwanted advances. With her dying breath, the mermaid cursed his entire town, creating a dangerous sandbar across the Camel estuary that would become known as the Doom Bar of Padstow.
