“Jeremy Corbyn gets into Downing Street, pulls a lever currently jammed at neoliberalism, yoinks it in the direction of social democracy and all is good”

I find this incredibly persuasive by James Meadway that Corbynism was able to evade fundamental questions about the state due to the fiscal enablements of low interest rates in the 2010s. The Greens will not be able to evade these questions due to the different fiscal climate of the 2020s but that there are a lot of intellectual resources in the green movement to tackle this.

As Nigel Farage dominates headlines, Jeremy Corbyn is being overlooked by the media – just as he was in 2017. But could there be a shift quietly underway? Read the full article here ⤵️ www.opendemocracy.net/en/uk-politi... #ukpolitics #ukgovernment #yourparty #jeremycorbyn #corbynism #zarahsultana

Early success of Corbyn’s new party should give #progressives hope for 2029

#Corbynism cut through with the public in 2017. To do so again, his #NewParty must show it's not just a protest vote.

Looking back from the other side of the Likud/IDF genocide in Gaza, and the aggressive wars they've launched against a number of neighbouring countries, it's hard to see this "post-mortem" of Corbynism as anything other than a hatchet job;

Running interference for the UK establishment's desire to keep UK foreign policy locked to that of the US. By smearing any and all criticism of Israel by the left as "antisemitism".

Labour's Institutional Antisemitism Crisis

Focusing on Labour's institutional antisemitism crisis, the first episode features former Labour councillor Adam Langleben, Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland and human rights barrister Adam Wagner.

Gen Z Reform voters who are sympathetic to Corbyn. Or, the jouissance of Nigel Farage

Usual caveats about vox pops apply but it’s really interesting if the sympathy of these Gen Z Reform voters to Corbyn is illustrative of a wider trend:

I’ve been thinking recently about the jouissance of Nigel Farage. The example which stuck with me of this was his entrance to the Tory party conference in 2023, captured by Owen Jones below. He exudes cheerfulness and bonhomie, even with a hostile interviewer, against a backdrop of a Conservative collapse 👇

I don’t think we should underestimate how powerful this sense of enjoyment can be with young men suffering from what a growing TikTok conspiracy theory calls “the 2020 effect”: the emptying of colour of the world, the loss of vibrancy and life, since the pandemic for a generation who arguably were hardest hit by lockdown measures while being least at risk from infection. The TikTok phenomenon suggests a networked recovery of jouissance amongst young men, consolidating it seems around a radical right able and willing to mobilise them rather than an eviscerated centre-left which has no idea what to do with the power it has won by defenestrating the radical left.

"With two seats still left to declare, Labour has won 9.6 million votes – around 33.7% of all votes cast. This is far less than the 12.8 million votes (40%) the party secured in 2017, when Jeremy Corbyn was leader." https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/election-results-starmer-labour-win-mean-for-left-independent-candidates-green/ #DoNotMention2017 #JeremyCorbyn #Corbynism #Labour #LabourMeanBusiness #BusinessAsUsual #LabourTorySameOldStory

The Spectre of Starmer Keeps Haunting Me

The sinister and cynical careerist who seems to have haunted me for years is about to make the UK even more vulnerable to fascist takeover.

MediaActivist
"Several polls in recent months have indicated that around 70% of people in the UK want an immediate ceasefire, and there are weekly demonstrations in towns and cities across the country in support of Palestinians. Organisers of a march in London last week estimated that up to 400,000 people had gathered to demand an end to the violence. These protests receive minimal coverage in the mainstream media, bar senior Conservatives labelling the peaceful crowds as ‘hate mobs’. The government maintains strong support for Israel, continuing to sell arms and share intelligence with the country, as well as allowing it to use RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus as a support base – a position Labour has largely agreed with. This leaves a huge gap in political representation, at least from the biggest two parties, for swathes of people nationwide." "Corbyn's proffered alternative is the Peace and Justice Project, which he set up in January 2021. But that maximises the worst side of "Corbynism". It is not an active movement; and the focus is chiefly on international affairs, where..it tags along with China and Russia and absolutist anti-Israel-ism.

Corbyn would do better to follow Tony Benn, who said in 2001 (at about the same age that Corbyn is now) that he was "leaving politics to do more in politics".

Corbyn for mayor?

According to two polls published in the Evening Standard on 16 November, Jeremy Corbyn will do poorly if he stands in the London mayor election on 2 May 2024.
