They've cut down the trees in an area that's part of one of my regular walks 😭

On the one hand, it's sad to see the trees gone, on the other, if it wasn't for #forestry , there probably wouldn't be any woods to begin with. It would probably be all fields.

The trees they cut down are sweet chestnuts using a technique called #coppicing where they cut down the trees to a stump every 10 to 20 years, then let them regrow.

TIL how to make a hurdle from coppiced hazel.

Two hurdles were made today and a couple others are off to a good start.

It’s tough work on the fingers twisting the hazel rods to enable them to bend around the end stakes where they act as stays.

I had an enjoyable and very satisfying time making this.

They will be used to make a barrier between the nature reserve and the allotment site next door. #Nature #Gardening #NewSkills #Allotment #Coppicing

@natureworks "a range of blended services (#agroforestry, education, #coppicing, tourism, burial ground, orchard etc) that support sustainable #livelihoods whilst simultaneously increasing #biodiversity."
Yum, yum. You're talking my language.
Got stuff you might want to have published in the US, Pc Design Mag, perhaps? Do you know Maddy Harland, editor at Pc Mag? She'd publish your stuff, too, if she hasn't already.
I like the range of subjects at https://buttondown.email/natureworks/archive/

The Wildlife Forest Garden

Wildlife forest garden design for a climate emergency. We need to create radical abundance by working within ecological boundaries in all areas.

I love coppicing and other kinds of resprout agriculture. I'm on my second cycle of a willow and alder copse l. Someone said you could count a person's age in how many cycles they've gone through. It's easier to remember than the years for sure. #coppicing #resproutagriculture #pollarding #alder #alnus #willow #salix #biomass #carbonfarming #naturalgeoengineering

Dear Friends of #Chalk #Streams
Went for a walk along the Wandle, early morning.

These carp, one is part #koi, are nearly impossible to see. So I enhanced the image. Above the carp top right are tiddlers, small fish. The #Wandle is the fastest #flowing #river in #England. It was until fifty years ago a waste of suds, sewage and pollution. Before that, water mills powered the industrial revolution.

Now it is coming back to life. ✔️

Restocking, #hazel and other #trees being #planted on its banks. Excellent #coppicing. Thrush was #singing for a mate. #Parakeets are now common tree nesters. I always keep a look out for the #kingfishers.

Coppicing (Habitat 🌄)

Coppicing is the traditional method in woodland management of cutting down a tree to a stump, which in many species encourages new shoots to grow from the stump or roots, thus ultimately regrowing the tree. A forest or grove that has been subject to coppicing is called a copse or coppice, in which young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to n...

Coppicing - Wikipedia

@BardfromtheBookshop so, of these, the only things to germinate have been two out of twenty American walnuts. Next time, I am putting the potted up nuts in mouse-proof boxes. 0/20 for hazelnuts and chestnut germination is very disappointing #hazel #chestnut #reforesting #coppicing
@light_bulbs This is a pleasant read. Thank you for sharing. #Coppicing, #Hazelnut, #Sustainability, #ForestGarden
A look at an artisanal #charcoal maker in the UK. I find this article particularly fascinating having read Ruth Goodman's 'The Domestic Revolution' a while ago that covers the old practice of #coppicing and the different #woods for #cookery. https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2023/may/30/burning-ambition-the-life-of-an-artisanal-charcoal-maker-in-pictures #foodhistory
Burning ambition: the life of an artisanal charcoal maker – in pictures

Darryl Kelbrick shows Christopher Thomond the painstaking process behind artisan charcoal burning, a practice he has spent the past decade learning in an ancient coppiced woodland where he lives with his partner off-grid

Spent some time on the plot. Dug a bean trench and filled with grass clippings. Set up a hop pole using a coppiced ash shoot. Found a hazel growing in an inconvenient place and moved it. #hopbine #coppicing
