Spoiler alert: “It’s like flowers on steroids" is not referring to the areas that were heated. This is not encouraging news. But then, it shows how the #ClimateCrisis will change valued ecosystems.

A long-running experiment in Colorado provides an ‘alarming’ view of how rapidly unchecked global heating could transform fragile ecosystems

We can’t take care of the planet in the long term unless we take care of each other now. And we can’t take care of each other in the long term unless we take care of the planet now. I believe in the rights of our fellow species to make a home here, too, and I welcome them with the plants they need to […]

#BrunswickME - Late Season #SeedSowing at Woodward Point

Friday, March 27, 2026
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

#WoodwardPointPreserve
219 Woodward Point Road
Brunswick, ME

"March is late in the season?! For native plants it is! Most native plant seeds require a long time in the cold and snow of winter in order to germinate. But, there are a few species that don’t require this, and fortunately they’re all easy ones for beginning growers. Come join us for the last seed sowing workshop of the year!

We will guide a hands-on exploration of the many steps of growing #NativePlants from seed, and establishing diverse landscapes using seed-grown plants. We will also learn about the diverse plants that grow here in Maine and their unique #SeedCollection and seed sowing processes.

Participants will practice winter seed sowing themselves, leaving one pot for the new #CommunitySeedGarden at Woodward Point Preserve, and take one pot to build #habitat at home.

Notes on access: This workshop will be held in an unheated barn. If the weather is sunny, we will start the workshop outdoors. To come prepared, dress warmly but in layers. The parking lot includes space for 18 vehicles and 4 additional handicap accessible spots. Please park nose in, snugly as reasonable, to best accommodate the full number of participants. The barn is located directly adjacent to the parking lot. No bathrooms are available on site. Please let us know if there are ways we can help get you to the event!

Tickets

Our sliding scale registration is offered to make this event as accessible as possible while covering the costs of time, seeds, soil and pots. The recommended level is $25 for non-members, and $20 for members. Paying above provides generous support to others to attend, and contributing at lower levels is welcome if cost is a barrier to attendance. Thank you, we look forward to seeing you there!"

"This presentation will describe the fundamentals of making habitat at home with #NativePlants. As #ExtremeWeather becomes more common, our spaces can serve as a vital habitat and climate refuge for #wildlife, providing much-needed relief from #HeatWaves, desiccating winds, and heavy downpours.

"#TylerRefsland, Manager of Applied Ecology at the Wild Seed Project (#WSP), has an extensive background in plant ecology, forest restoration, and climate change. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he studied how land management practices affect the drought resilience and carbon storing capacity of oak-hickory woodlands. Prior to his role at WSP, Tyler was a postdoctoral researcher at Michigan State University, working in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and Wisconsin DNR to develop seed collection and planting strategies to promote climate resilient forests in the Great Lakes region. He lives in Portland with his partner, their two children, and dog Harriet

"Portland’s Sustainability Series is co-hosted by the Portland Public Library and #MomentumConservation, and is sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank. The Portland Sustainability Series presents speakers who share aspects of the work needed to make Maine and our environment more sustainable. Please join us as we engage in these important topics and conversations!"

Honor World Wetlands Day with a Charleston marsh cleanup

by Claudia Landis

#CharlestonSC (WCBD) – "A #marsh cleanup event is planned on World Wetlands Day in Downtown Charleston.

"The #CharlestonWaterkeeper, #KeepCharlestonBeautiful, and #TheMarshProject are hosting a cleanup near Waterfront Park in Downtown Charleston and are seeking volunteers.

"Volunteers will pick up litter from one of the city’s beloved marsh fronts. Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing that can get dirty.

"Spaces are limited, so interested volunteers are encouraged to sign up here.

"Feb. 2 is World Wetlands Day, a fitting moment for Charleston Waterkeeper to celebrate, as about 40% of Charleston is considered a wetland ecosystem, the group says on a recent Facebook post.

"The group also says marshes are vital. They provide #habitat, stabilize #shorelines, and protect us from #StormSurges. Cleanups help keep these #ecosystems resilient and protect all residents."
