Considering this format is used to encode & archive most of modern research/knowledge/information, I also see this inherent complexity as a gigantic threat in terms of #PermaComputing, #CollapseComputing, #FrugalComputing. I think there's a need for something like https://qoiformat.org/, i.e. simplifying, rethinking and omitting some of the features in PDF in lieu of increased simplicity, longevity & usability in lower compute resource environments/futures...
QOI — The Quite OK Image Format

@scops This is maybe more of a #collapseComputing approach, but my reason for trying to go for a much lower common denominator is part availability. Random microcontrollers are easier to scavenge than FPGAs, they also don't need as much specialized tooling.

There are many things I like in Forth.

- It's the closest you can go to the processor's modus operandi without assembly (you know, the stack)
- Because of this, it's extremely useful today that all love higher level languages to hide (not solve) complexity
- You can build "Forth machines" on single-board computers, paving the way to your own collapse computing cyberdeck
- No cyberdeck? Use an old old PC as a Forth machine
- Forth REPL is not sexy like Lisp's but it's nice
- Postfix notation is kinda cool (well, prefix too)

New(ish) account, new home.

I'm a freelance tech writer / software developer / KM project manager based in Europe. Digitally, I was born in the 90s. So I grew up eating cyberpunk books, BBSes, home computers, hacking, then the first doses of Internet and the Web.

In the 90s and the first 00s I developed my (ahem) "philosophy": digital spaces are (can be, should be) autonomous zones where different cultures, and sub/counter-cultures, can thrive.

These are the years of the enshittification of Internet, but it can't rain forever (cit.) and I see the Fediverse as a new opportunity for some of us to recreate better and safer digital spaces.

That's the "vision". Than there's the daily life: I write code (awful, mostly), help companies in managing their knowledge bases, write technical documentation, sometimes write tech articles for (mostly unknown) business tech manazines.

In the spare time, I tinker with Linux, SCB boards and "old" languages like Forth, Assembly and Lisp. I'm convinced that permacomputing and, maybe, collapse computing are our digital future. So, "back to basics" seems a good idea.

I have a blog that I consider more a digital garden. No daily or even regular posts, when I feel I have something to share, I write. It's very basic, because it's like a perma-garden: no strange languages, web framework, dynamic stuff or whatever.

That's all, I guess. Nice to meet ya.

...

The goal is to reduce/eliminate e-waste, and to have a software ecosystem that is resistant to supply chain constraints or even collapse. I think a subculture of #PermaComputing is what you might call #CollapseComputing (not certain about the terminology there) -- creating software tools and hardware flexibility that can survive even the total collapse of the modern economy and supply chain -- think Mad Max with computers, haha.

I'm brand new here, so an #introduction is a good idea:

The #FPGA uxn thread is giving me Ideas. What could one do with a salvaged FPGA and are they even salvageable? What kind of equipment would one need to make use of them?

I've seen a lot of folks in #postmarketOS chat want to use their phones as servers, they might also be interested in this. Sadly it doesn't use the battery at all, so it lacks the UPS feature some desire from using a normally battery operated device in a tethered fashion.
