One of the best experiences I ever had as a tabletop roleplayer was a very intense campaign in which characters weren't created by rolling dice or filling out character sheets. Instead the gamemaster spent hours with each player discussing their characters as people, not numbers or statistics.

We literally described them as if they were characters in a book or people we knew. It gave us a really different outlook on the characters, much more focused on their personalities and histories rather than the mechanics of their representation in the game.

And those discussions with the GM went on over weeks. We'd talk for an hour or two, break for a couple of days to think things over, and then talk again. That allowed us to develop the characters to a far greater degree than anything I had ever experienced before.

The GM was my best friend, and I knew that he was one of the best GMs I had ever met. So when it came time to create my character, I decided to try something different: My essential concept, I told him, was essentially something like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. He would start as a sniveling loser, but along the way he would transform.

To make things more interesting, I also suggested that he have little or no memory of his childhood. That gave the GM a lot to work with; I was going to change, but I didn't know what I would change into or how, and I would have very limited information about my early life.

There are some gamemasters I wouldn't trust with that much leeway, but in this case it felt right.

By the way, I used that same method of character creation, or a modified version of it, for a number of other campaigns I did over the years. I have to say that it ALWAYS paid off. The more time you put in ahead of the game to create character personalities, the more involved each player will be with their characters. They get into their heads much more. Better role playing happens.

@SingsongRaptor So, I went digging further for more creators since our last conversation and I did find a few more:

White dude, but not really in the same category as people like Blenderguru. Has GNC vibes: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4DaGBn7XmbKv4z9sm54EpQ

May or may not be regurgitating other tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQTET1MMhAoyh3Z1Bvjzb7Q

But in terms of non white dude character tutorial makers, there's the ones I mentioned before like Crashsune Academy and sorry stacy on #Youtube:

Poole's also also making a character creation series, but he is a white dude, just not really in the same category of the standard #Blender tutorial maker, so that's up to you. I've spoken to him before, he seems chill. However, the first two I've mentioned focus on low-poly while Poole's is still very simple. Definitely not as insane as FFXIV characters.

I talked to a 3D Vtuber artist, and these are the suggestions she gave on minority tutorial makers, but they're mostly VRChat-focused:

And this one's on #Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sn0whunter_

I don't think I've found any that focus on creating gear/weapons, unfortunately. Most of the character creation series tend to be really basic. I'll keep an eye out, though.

Poole

I like character design. That's like 90% of what you need to know right there.

Today's piece. It's a painting to get in the headspace of my character for a new campaign. We're going for space horror, & for Tod (she/her) that includes being "infected" with some kind of alien being that gives her special powers.

She's in an interesting headspace.

The Elders are a fairly new setting I created. There are now some starter assets: Careers + names + wolf creation tables. All free:

Instead of listing personality traits, write prompts from the character’s own perspective. For example, rather than describing a brave knight, try something like: “Write a knight’s journal entry after running from a fight. They’re trying to explain why it wasn’t cowardice—just good strategy.” #CharacterCreation #WritingTips #InnerConflict #CharacterDevelopment #CreativeWriting #Storytelling #WritingCommunity #CharacterDepth #FictionWriting #WritingInspiration (2/2)

The best prompts avoid vague words. Don’t ask for a "funny" character. Ask for a scene where someone tells a bad joke to break the ice after a fight. This shows who they are instead of just telling us. #CharacterDevelopment #WritingTips #CreativeWriting #WritingCommunity #Storytelling #CharacterCreation #WritingPrompt #FictionWriting #CharacterDepth #WritingAdvice (3/3)
