Former Oculus CTO John Carmack calls Meta's 30% VR developer fee 'wasteful churn,' arguing the company subsidizes third-party devs only to tax them 30% back. He suggests Epic's model of no fees for the first 1M USD in revenue would better reward increased economic activity. https://www.roadtovr.com/john-carmack-oculus-cto-meta-fee-structure-critique/ #Metaverse #VR #AR #Meta #Carmack
Former Oculus CTO Calls Meta's 30% VR Dev Fee "wasteful churn" in Face of Subsidizing Individual Apps

Legendary programmer and former Oculus CTO John Carmack doesn’t think Meta’s developer incentive structure is healthy for the Horizon Store ecosystem, calling it “wasteful churn.” The News While Carmack departed Meta in 2022, concluding his “decade in VR,” the one-time Oculus CTO has never been one to mince words when it comes to virtual reality. Looking back at Catacomb 3D, the game that led to Wolfenstein 3D

Romero, Carmack, and colleagues discuss an oft-forgotten piece of PC gaming history...

So it turns out that John #Carmack is a total fucking rectal wart who doesn't have any self-awareness or empathy.

He has outed himself as unaware of the class and privilege he enjoys and believes he is better than those poor souls who made a choice he can't even see as valid.
John Carmack's 3/18 .plan

Not sure if I really care that much about #Romero or #Carmack these days but it sure is fascinating to realize in hindsight decades later that it turns out Romero is somewhat likable and Carmack is an arrogant and nasty asshole. The writing was on the wall when Carmack was associating himself with scumbags like Palmer Luckey, Zuckerberg or Musk.

John Romero on the birth of iD Software | Boing Boing

John Romero was the co-founder of iD Sofware, the house behind hits such as Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein 3D, all of which he played key roles in developing, even as he moved swiftly on at the heigh…

I’ve always idolized #Carmack and (unwittingly) emulated his work ethic. I love to code and would do it for free.

But reading the downfall section on “Masters of Doom”…he really destroyed anything fun about working at idSoftware

If he has an ounce of self reflection he'll take a step back, look at the people all trying the same coersion tactic ("the wokes will never accept you now, embrace us!"), and connect some pretty obvious dots. I mean, assuming he's not just playing dumb about all this, which is already a big pill to swallow. But ultimately if people point out to you a con is bigoted on their own website, and your response is, "Oh, well, I'm still gonna go and headline," no amount of "I'm not political" changes the fact you made an informed choice, and you get to live with the consequences. #carmack #johncarmack
Man, Carmack trying to play dumb with an "I'm just grillin'" defense (at a KKK cookout) is disappointing as hell. Even more depressing is watching the people diving into his replies hissing "Don't apologize to them! They feed on that. They'll never accept you again, unlike usss!" #carmack #johncarmack
