Working on a DIY #Flock camera detector using stuff I already own (instead of buying yet another ESP32 project kit).

Pi Zero will scan BLE for MAC patterns and known manufacturer IDs that ALPRs broadcast. iPhone will provide GPS coordinates over hotspot via the GPS2IP app.

Will have the Pi plugged into a #Beepy so I can have a screen, keyboard, and battery handy for troubleshooting.

We'll see how it shakes out.

@valhalla @praveen it also depends on the hardware, doesn't it?

#Debian on a #PocoF1 is very much a smartphone, but if you put the same label to Debian on a #Beepy it won't quite live up to expectations

Unfortunately, many people have the impression that "being small with a physical numpad" and "capable of running complex applications" are mutually exclusive resulting in most manufacturers not giving good specs to such devices. So in practice #KaiOS phones are closer to feature phones 😕

@andypiper how do you navigate using the playdate?

i just ressurected my beloved #beepy ;)
trying to compile iamb.chat to enter the #matrix (again)

Anybody know where I can find a reflective lcd screen that is readable in sun light? Like the one that #Beepy uses.

I want to build a #writerdeck / #cyberdeck with a raspberry pi and a screen that works in sun light. I had a look on e-ink displays but it seems like drivers to use them as primary monitor doesn't exist (or I couldn't find them at least).

Or if there is a place to buy a complete Beepy or similar?

Any suggestions are welcome!

@castaway are you coming to the @acccgn ? that would be cool and increases the possibility of a session about the #geminiprotocol or all kinds of #beepy things ;)

@micheal @castaway @librescrum

@dynamic that is true too. The Nokia 1100 was perfect and one of the only reasons I didn't go with it again (besides people expecting you to have Internet and maps and suchlike) was I wanted to be able to use XMPP. My somewhat far-fetched plan was to buy a KaiOS phone and write an XMPP app for it, which as you can see I'm still working on 😅️

I look at my pocket calculator every so often and am like "Hmm, why didn't they—?"

By the way, have you seen the #Beepy?

Typing on a touchscreen sucks, not least because I have to be constantly *looking* at the screen while typing

Time to get a #Beepy?

@disaster2life I mean #KaiOS is good if you want to also make and receive phone calls/SMS or create a 4G WiFi hotspot on said portable hackable device?

But if those are not important there'd be other options too (check #Beepy and #WiPhone!)

For me, it was the one device I'd carry around (until I got #Mobian on my #PocoF1, but my #Nokia2720Flip is still 💯 when I'm not in the city and apt to be blocked by QR-coded React-bloated ticketing systems or something)

Excited to do some more work with the Beepy I've borrowed from a friend. Continuing the goal of having a more phone-like ecosystem for it, I'm going to continue making rich/textualize TUIs for services and utils. First up - Network Manager.
