Irish guy just moved to Berlin, struggling to learn German, chess, and most other things I try, most recently narrowly avoiding death from electricity.

Feel free to follow, DM, etc, especially if you're in the Berlin area!

Right on schedule* with a new blog post, this time about git worktrees and why you absolutely should be using them!

Let me know what you think!

Why You Should Be Using Git Worktrees

It's no surprise to anyone reading this, that git is the standard for source control today. It has completely replaced SVN, Mercurial, and many other systems we're glad to leave in the past, becoming without doubt the industry standard source control system. Maybe someday it will be superceded by jiujitsu

Random Bits

Looking for new blogs/feeds to follow as I'm trying to get back into using RSS again! Any suggestions?

Feeling like absolutely YEETing my raspberry Pi into the night.

There's just constantly issues with them now. Peak time was Pi 2 or 3 days. I honestly couldn't in good conscience recommend them to anyone for anything these days -_-

Also also, @latenightlinux is this how you ask questions? Because I'd like to ask this question!

Is there some magical file system/directory structure that will solve my problems? What tools should I be using? I have heard of Johnny Decimal and ZFS and more tools than I care to remember, but I don't know how to start maintaining my own data and infrastructure in a sustainable way!

A system to organise your life

Johnny.Decimal is a system to organise your life. Find things, quickly, with more confidence, and less stress. It's free to use and the concepts are the same at home or work.

I'm once again trying to improve my "digital hygiene" and am looking for advice.

I have a home server, a personal laptop, and a phone. Phone things are synced to my server, so that part is fine. However, my laptop is a mess, the home server has a somewhat structured mess of Docker containers and volumes, and I have random data in Google Drive/Gmail.

My current setup is that I have two external 1TB drives, and I just `cp` as much as I can from the server/laptop to them about twice a year (1/)

Started playing with Hydra recently. Really fun to mess around with, especially while you have a time limit of trying to create something from your currently playing song!

Considering going to FOSDEM again this year. Any suggestions for the best way to get to Brussels from Berlin? Train preferred!

Also, any talks, events, or side-events that people are excited for?
