BASEMENT 5
1965-1980
1981 Germany pressing
This is a bit of an odd one; a record I found out in California this past summer during my family trip to Anaheim.
Basement Five were formed out of the art department of Island Records in 1978.
A very politically charged, all-black #postpunk band who used elements of dub and reggae to express what it was like to be young in Britain 🇬🇧 and to have to endure Margaret Thatcher, poverty, classism, racism, and all those fun things.
At least we solved ONE of those problems.
Margaret Thatcher is dead.
Pretty interesting record.
It’s got some aggressive production value courtesy of Martin Hannett, and the rhythm section sounds great, particularly on “No Ball Games”.
Don Letts was briefly a member, and the band also featured the well-known underground photographer Dennis Morris.
