Saw Jennifer Archibald"s Maslow's Peak on Friday. It's based on Golding's Lord of the Flies, which you wouldn't think would make a good ballet but, wow, it sure does. Such a densely realized piece, and the dancers really inhabited the story. I reviewed it here.

I love reviewing because that is the way I see music, and I have lots of opinions! It's not a career, because it barely pays for dinner before the show, but I still love it, especially when I get to review things like BalletX's show this week at the Wilma Theater. I wish everybody could see it!

Glorious evening of dance! BalletX is moving down Broad to the Suzanne Roberts Theater next season, but they said good-bye to the Wilma with three exciting ballets. Would have a hard time choosing a favorite.

Back from BalletX opening night of Sidd: A Hero's Journey, Nicolo Fonte's new full-length ballet based on the Herman Hesse novel. It was amazing, but kind of overwhelming. I need to go back and see it again to let it sink in. Sometimes Fonte's work is like that--it kind of sinks in with repeat viewings. So much to think about. The Ferryman's dance at the very beginning was gorgeous.

Still with BalletX at the Mann Justin Peck's Become a Mountain was fabulous, full of energy. The program had some story about building a mountain, but it looked like a fun rehearsal on a stripped down stage, with the dancers in in white socks and practice clothes. They drew us right in with the high energy fun. #DanDeacon wrote the music and he was there with a band. The live music added to the party mood.

An interesting weekend. The BalletX put on a triple bill at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts Friday and Saturday. The first dance, Amy Hall Gardner's Switching the Groove was a split decision for me. The first half was very light and pretty, in particular the women in rose-colored tulle, I can't say much more than that. The second half hit an earthier beat. The movement dug into the stage--the dancers were into it and you could feel that energy.

Trey McIntyre's Big Ones, set to the music Amy Winehouse with the dancers in pleather and tall bunny ears followed. I've seen this piece in three different theaters now--the intimate Wilma, the Zellerbach at Annenberg, and now the Mann. Each venue brings something new, and they had new dancers this time. I really love it, especially the women in F**Me Pumps and the duet to Valerie. (here's a link to some video on their insta https://www.instagram.com/p/CrjLqMvAviz/?hl=en
