Saw Jennifer Archibald"s Maslow's Peak on Friday. It's based on Golding's Lord of the Flies, which you wouldn't think would make a good ballet but, wow, it sure does. Such a densely realized piece, and the dancers really inhabited the story. I reviewed it here.

Broad Street Review

March is coming, but my new monthly dance calendar at Broad Street Review has arrived! Since PhiladelphiaDance closed as part of the UArts closure, it's been hard to find out what is going on in dance. So BSR stepped up. Because Philly needs dance.

The month in Philly Dance: March 2025

Camille Bacon-Smith debuts her new monthly column at BSR, curating a list of upcoming dance performances happening in and around the city of Philadelphia.

Broad Street Review

I really can't believe that I had two articles on the most read list at Broad Street Review, but it is even more amazing that the second one was a review of Joe González' Jo-Mé dance, a company that deserved a much larger audience than they had.

A review is usually there and gone, but this one includes a link to the YouTube video of the performance, so even as a review it gave a wider audience a chance to see the work. And now you can too!

Broad Street Review

I have never before had one of the 10 most read articles at Broadstreetreview, where I do arts reporting, but this Year I had two! Woohoo! When I heard I was on the list, I figured, correctly, that it was this one, because who doesn't love MaryCassatt? And curator Jennifer Thompson is a delight to chat with.

My review of Lily Kind's I Got a Tape I Wanna Play is live at Broad Street Review. Large chunks of it were hilarious, and the best part is that you can still see it, wherever you are, because the Philadelphia Dance Project, that sponsored the performance put it on YouTube!

Fringe in the neighborhood! Blues to Funk and street dance. Sort of a one-man poetry slam with music. Thinking about going back see what the extra performers add to the mix.

Made it out to the Latvian Society last night for my first Fringe Festival event this year. Gunnar Montana is always interesting, and his Black Wood was an immersive dip into gothic horror and female power. #dance #PhillyFringe #Philadelphia #GunnarMontana #BroadStreetReview

Broad Street Review

When I mentioned to Philadelphia Ballet's artistic director Angel Corella that I was doing an article for #BroadStreetReview about visas for international artists, he reminisced about his own years traveling on an artists visa. He remembered all those embassy interviews--said he did more of them in Japan than he did in his own home of Spain! From the great to the small, it's a labyrinth.

I talked to artistic director Angel Corella for a preview the Philadelphia Ballet's Sleeping Beauty. He said that he shortened it a bit, but all the glittery bits are still there, as are the famous dances we all look forward to.
