The #1 reason "why #AI is unlikely to become conscious" is b/c what we generously call "AI" today, is nothing more than "deep database scrubbing". NOT "intelligence".
Data Centers simply scour the internet looking for "links" between things. The more links it finds, the more likely it is to claim something is true.
But as every scientist can tell you:
"Commonality does not prove causality".
#ArticialIntelligence will never replace Natural Stupidity.

Products have become overly complicated with an abundance of features, causing frustration among customers. Correspondent David Pogue delves into how simplicity in technology can simplify our complex lives.
Just like #ClimateScience more generally, it seems you can't write an article about the biophysical damage caused by #ArticialIntelligence without some sort of #HopeCoda - in the case of #AI, saying "but it may help us solve climate"
Most of these proposed "solutions" that use AI simply monitor our destruction of #habitat and #EarthSystems
Very few are actually about reducing that destruction
This is just another form of #Greenwash and needs to be called out as such

The once again open-source AI language model Llama 3 will be published shortly. Meta announces different versions with different capabilities.

I think adding Alt Text to images provides image generation AI models with better training material.
Not to say that that's the Only reason it's being encouraged, but it's good to keep in mind. Dual motive is a thing.
Just a gentle reminder that you can blacklist hashtags if you would rather not see posts talking about certain topics! Some people just wanna see cute things and that's entirely ok, I want to make sure I'm not bothering people with content they don't wanna see. I use Mastodon as a house and home to talk about anything that crosses my mind, or to give updates about new things X3
This article from 2015 covers the subject of AIs (what is happening now and what will happen) extremely well.
It's a long way to read it completely, but it's more than worth it as it talks about what humanity is going to face. It's a subject we should take really seriously.
