*Developers are #ableists because they can't profit as much from #PeopleWithDisabilities. Disabled folks have been struggling for far too long, trying to find & obtain #AccessibleHousing.

Starting next March in B.C., all large new condominium and apartment buildings will require 100-per cent adaptable suites and first-floor suites in smaller apartment buildings will be required to be easily adapted so anyone with a disability can live in them.

Developers say this could add tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of new homes because they will all require bigger rooms, lower outlets and various changes in washrooms.

Tom Davidoff, associate professor of business at the University of British Columbia told Global News that if accessibility for everyone is not mandated, it is certainly possible that builders would provide almost no accessible units.

I had never given much thought about how inaccessible our indoor spaces can be.
I was warned that while recovering from top surgery I would not be able to lift weights, but I underestimated how many things in my house demand overhead movement or full range of motion to be reachable.
As a result I could not perform any chore (or part of it) alone, and ended up burdening my wife more than necessary. Then she got sick for a few days, during which the whole system broke.

I had never thought concretely about arranging my space in order to minimize how much extra effort is required to perform tasks or entertain myself, but I will take this opportunity to learn and apply changes before it will be my wife's turn to be taken care of.

If any of you have suggestions or resources to improve home accessibility, I would love to check them out.
