I was thinking already about moving my open educational materials to #Zensical, the modern static site generator tool, then listening to
#TalkPythonToMe episode #542 made me even more excited about it!

Zensical - a modern static site generator

If you've built documentation in the Python ecosystem, chances are you've used Martin Donath's work. His Material for MKDocs powers docs for FastAPI, uv, AWS, OpenAI, and tens of thousands of other projects. But when MKDocs 2.0 took a direction that would break Material and 300 ecosystem plugins, Martin went back to the drawing board. The result is Zensical: A new static site generator with a Rust core, differential builds in milliseconds instead of minutes, and a migration path designed to bring the whole community along.

So... I managed to put together some hacky scripts and get out of my dependency on GitHub Pages, I can now publish my stuff elsewhere... now I want to slowly move repos to #codeberg
I'm still thinking on how to preserve the huge number of images from sketch-a-day without burdening the codeberg repo...
Also, I think I want to move my open teaching materials (material-aulas) from this precarious markdown rendering script to something clever and robust like #zensical

Moving my blog from #mkdocs to #obsidian -> #quartz

I've found the process for updating my blog to be very tedious, and mkdocs is definitely not the right tool.. I was happy that it looked like it was going to get a new life with #zensical, but it seems that the blogging aspect of the port is just not a high priority.

I'm not complaining, I kind of always felt like using mkdocs for blogging was a bit of a square peg in a round hole.

Added this page to the online services section of my documentation website. It's a list of free (also ad-free) and mostly temporary file-sharing websites run by volunteers or small teams (it seems). Let me know if there are others that I should include in my list.

I am now using #Zensical for my #documentation website, using the same code I used for Materials for #mkdocs. I converted the mkdocs.yml to zensical.toml using #chatgpt, and I didn't like the TOML format. It looks unnecessarily complicated. So I will continue using YAML until it becomes necessary.

I've been testing #zensical since I will have to migrate off of #mkdocs and #mkdocsmaterial.

Across 3 sites, I only had to change one line in the yaml files and run `zensical` instead of `mkdocs`. Total potential migration time for 3 sites, 10 minutes.

Why potential and not complete? Pending blog and OpenAPI spec support. Once those are released, I can finish testing and migrate.

@squidfunk looking good so far. Thanks!

The Slow Collapse of MkDocs

How personality clashes, an absent founder, and a controversial redesign fractured one of Python's most popular projects.

I just migrated my personal site from Mkdocs to Zensical.
