I sent this out to subscribers last weekend. A postcard from a lovely walk and an unexpectedly epic train journey.

“Our eventual escape – on the only train to run that day – came in the form of a circuitous eight-hour journey that began in the wrong direction and took us nearly to Scotland.”

A postcard from the Dales: thunder and lightning

Our two days of walking included a very apt flavour of ice cream and ended with a journey in the wrong direction.

For this weekend's photo it is a ruined cottage in a field with bluebells up in the Yorkshire Dales.

This walk from Malham Tarn in the #YorkshireDales is apart from the busy usual routes. Great limestone outcrops on view during the walk & opportunity to climb Great Close Hill, which provides a great 360° view and one of the best of Malham Tarn itself. The Watlowes Dry Valley.

This Ice Age gorge was carved out by a powerful river, dropping in several waterfalls before crashing over the top of Malham Cove, what would've been one of Europe's largest waterfalls.

10,000 or so years ago.

Now, all dry.

Plenty more images from this day are available just for you, right here -> https://www.iancylkowski.com/posts/watlowes-dry-valley-yorkshire-dales-spring/ 👍

This #YorkshireDales walk is from Keld, the last and highest settlement at the western end of Swaledale. The Pennine Way and Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk cross here. It goes to the 17th Century Tan Hill Inn. #Waterfalls & great views. See https://www.happyhiker.co.uk/MyWalks/YorkshireDales/KeldtoTanHillInn/Hiking%20Pages%20-%20Keld%20to%20Tan%20Hill%20Inn.htm
