"I recently presented a paper on #KhaimZhitlovsky, a major proponent of #secular #Jewish #diaspora nationalism and Jewish nationhood, at the Association for #Canadian #JewishStudies annual conference at #YorkUniversity in #Toronto.

#Zhitlovsky was born in #Ushachi near #Vitebsk in what is now #Belarus in 1865. A leading architect of secular #Jewishculture and thought, he was a central figure in the progressive Jewish intelligentsia of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in #Canada and the #UnitedStates.

At a Jewish International Cultural Conference organized in #Paris in September 1937, the Alveltlekher #Yiddisher Kultur Farband (#YKUF) was founded, and he was one of the supporters. As the honorary president of the YKUF in the #UnitedStates, Zhitlovsky became an icon of the #Yiddishist #Communist movement, particularly in western Canada, where he had inspired the founding of a strong secular #Yiddish school system."

Nice to hear the voices of two of my favourite people in the #klezmer or Canadian #yiddishist world, Avia Moore (artistic director of #Klezkanada) and Sebastian Schulman, translator and former Exec Director of same. I haven't been to KK in person in a decade but it was a very formative cultural milieu for me and dear to my heart.

Klezkanada’s Summer Retreat | Yiddish Book Center

Avia Moore and Sebastian Schulman join The Shmooze for a lively conversation about all things Klezakanda. This year’s lineup includes workshops on Yiddish song, dance, and language learning as well as a translation workshop, and a cabaret.

Could someone else in Greater Boston please raise a Yiddish speaking child?

Finally on #Babka and time for a new #introduction. I am a tenacious #Yiddishist and balebos at Olniansky Tekst Farlag. A publishing house based in Malmo, Sweden with 100% focus on #YiddishLiterature! I hope to find a lot of people here who speaks or want to speak #Yiddish and I must say it's looking good so far!

I am also active in the #Masorti community in Malmo and the current chairman of our small kehile. So general discussions about #Judaism is obviously of interest as well. ✡️
