“Ci tengo a dire che rispetto qualsiasi club e soprattutto qualsiasi nazionale. È stata una reazione istintiva, eravamo tra amici e stavamo vedendo dei rigori. Ma penso sia stato poco rispettoso”. Ha esordito così Federico Dimarco in conferenza stampa a tre giorni da Bosnia–Italia, con una premessa prima delle domande dei giornalisti. L’episodio in questione è il video che in poche ore ha fatto il giro del mondo: l’Italia vince contro l’Irlanda del Nord, i giocatori azzurri seguono dal telefono i rigori di Galles–Bosnia e al rigore decisivo della Bosnia esultano (in video si notano Dimarco, Vicario e Pio Esposito). I più entusiasti erano proprio Dimarco e Vicario, che avevano addirittura stretto il pugno. Scene riprese dalle telecamere Rai.
Il video in pochissimo tempo è diventato virale, fino ad arrivare sulle prime pagine dei quotidiani bosniaci: “Ho sentito anche Dzeko, un amico, gli ho fatto i complimenti. Ripeto, non ho mancato di rispetto a nessuno, né alla Bosnia né ai bosniaci; siamo tutti persone per bene. Ho anche sentito dire che siamo stati arroganti, ma c’è ben poco da esserlo, visto manchiamo la qualificazione da due Mondiali”, ha proseguito l’azzurro. In conclusione però una frecciatina anche alla Rai, autrice di quel video: “Inoltre, mi è dispiaciuto, e penso sia stato poco rispettoso, essere ripreso in un contesto dove c’erano amici, famiglie e pure bambini“.
Successivamente il calciatore dell’Inter ha risposto alle domande dei giornalisti: “Vogliamo assolutamente la qualificazione al Mondiale, siamo un gruppo che sta bene insieme. Ci aspettiamo un ambiente caldo, ma noi siamo l’Italia, dobbiamo fare una grande partita“. E sull’avversario: “È la testa che comanda le gambe, sappiamo che ci attende una sfida contro una squadra forte. Affrontiamo una squadra con diversi giocatori del nostro campionato, bisognerà essere bravi sotto ogni punto di vista“.

“Disrespectful to be filmed, there were families and children”: Dimarco on the video during Wales-Bosnia
“I want to say that I respect any club and especially any national team. It was an instinctive reaction, we were among friends and we were watching penalty kicks. But I think it was disrespectful. That’s how Federico Dimarco began in a press conference three days before Bosnia-Italy, with a preamble before the journalists’ questions. The incident in question is the video that went around the world in a few hours: Italy wins against Northern Ireland, the Azzurri players follow the penalty kicks of Wales-Bosnia and at the decisive penalty of Bosnia they celebrate (in the video you can see Dimarco, Vicario and Pio Esposito). Dimarco and Vicario were particularly enthusiastic, even making a fist. Scenes filmed by Rai cameras.
The video quickly became viral, reaching the front pages of Bosnian newspapers: “I also heard Dzeko, a friend, I complimented him. I repeat, I didn’t show disrespect to anyone, nor to Bosnia nor the Bosnians; we are all good people. I also heard that we were arrogant, but there’s not much to be so, given that we missed qualifying for two World Cups,” the Azzurro continued. In conclusion, however, there was also a dig at Rai, the author of that video: “Furthermore, I was sorry, and I think it was disrespectful, to be filmed in a context where there were friends, families and even children.”
Subsequently, the Inter player answered the journalists’ questions: “We absolutely want to qualify for the World Cup, we are a group that is doing well together. We expect a warm environment, but we are Italy, we have to play a great game.” And about the opponent: “It’s the head that commands the legs, we know that we face a challenge against a strong team. We are facing a team with several players from our league, we will have to be good from every point of view.”
