Good day at #GSAConnects2024. Held "Adieu to the Anthropocene?" session, complete with popcorn, lively talks, and livelier discussion. Presented #mangroves research about carbon sequestration. And introduced myself to @AltonDooley at the #WesternScienceCenter . That is one of the few posting on here from the GSA annual meeting, and one of the few mastodoners I've met IRL.
Today’s #DailyMastodon is a partial Pacific #Mastodon tusk, found in West Hollywood in 2012. Housed at #NHMLA. Brett Dooley from #WesternScienceCenter for scale. #paleontology
Yesterday a team from #WesternScienceCenter conducted exploratory excavations in #Pleistocene sediments at #JoshuaTreeNationalPark (under permit). Among the discoveries was this lower jaw, probably from the extinct llama Hemiauchenia. #FossilFriday #paleontology #camels

This weekend Western Science Center and Max’s Mobile Museum #M3 will be in Los Angeles at #lacomicon! I’m holding #3dprinted femora of an American mastodon (dark one) and a Pacific mastodon (light one). Visit our display this weekend to find out how these mastodons are different, to see dozens of different California mastodons, and to purchase plushies, fossil replicas, and more!

#Introduction. I’m the holotype Pacific mastodon, hanging out at the #WesternScienceCenter. I talk about whatever I want, which is usually #paleontology, #pleistocene, and #museums. Really anything but #mammoths, which are not worth my time. #MuseumMascot
It’s #MastodonMonday! This is a rare #SouthDakota mastodon tooth from the US National Museum collection in Washington. #WesternScienceCenter staff Brittney Stoneburg and Brett Dooley photographed it last week, and we produced the #photogrammetry #3dmodel the next day. We made this model so we can take measurements from it for our mastodon research. #paleontology #fossils #Pleistocene
A time series of #fossil scallops from Chesapeake Bay. At the bottom is Chesapecten middlesexensis (7.5 million years), at the top is Chesapecten jeffersonius (4.5 million years), and in the middle is an unnamed transitional form (7 million years). From a 2019 exhibit at #WesternScienceCenter. #FossilFriday #Evolution #seashells #mollusks #bivalve
