Ralph is also trying to get in on the sakura-mochi action...🤨

The origin of Kansai-style sakuramochi (桜餅) is less clear, though it had become widely popular by the late 18thC.
The texture of 'Dōmyōji-mochi' (道明寺餅) is far grainier and stickier, and it remains the most commonly bought sakuramochi in Japan.

Both versions of sakuramochi (桜餅) are also named after temples.

The Kantō-style 'Chōmeiji-mochi' (長命寺餅) is named after Chōmei-ji, a temple in Tōkyō close to the shop that first starting selling the sweets.

💛WAXING WINTER💛

Around the lunar New Year guests are served 'rōbai' (蝋梅), named after the fragrant 'yellow wax plum' which blooms at this time of year.
As the name suggests, the beehive-yellow blossoms look as if they have been carefully crafted from wax.

Je suis en train de découvrir l'univers des wagashi (les desserts japonais, surtout pour accompagner la cérémonie du thé) et ça me plaît parce que c'est peu sucré (et très joli !). Je crois que ce week-end, je vais tenter d'en faire 👀

We're kicking off Setsubun season with 2 sweets from Kameya Shigehisa (亀屋重久), named after a famous phrase you will hear during the February 3rd celebrations...

鬼は外!🫘👹🚪➡️
"Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!"
福は内!🍀➡️🚪😊
"Devils out! Fortune in!"

Afternoon walk through Kyoto from Kawai Shrine to the Kamogawa Delta ☀️

Found this bench shaped like Mitarashi-dango (traditional rice dumplings with a sweet soy glaze) at Kamogawa Park 🍡

This famous wagashi actually originated right here at Shimogamo Shrine back in the 13th or 14th century!

"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"🎶🎵

A rather adorable depiction of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer from Kameya Shigehisa (亀屋重久), a small store located in front of Myōshin-ji's north gate.

It may not look like the most festive of treats, but New Year for Nao-san is marked by the arrival of her beloved 'turnips'🥹

She begins 'kabura' (かぶら) season with Nijō Wakasaya's (二條若狭屋) adorable offering.

How many kabura will she consume this winter?🤔
