I had the pleasure of spending today wandering through the abandoned city Uxmal in the Yucatan. It was an amazing experience. I loved seeing the architecture and art of the Mayan people before Spanish colonialism.
I was trying to imagine what the city looked like when the pyramid was painted red and in full use — when the public squares and palaces thronged with 25 thousand inhabitants. I’d grown up watching so many shows and movies set in Ancient Rome and Egypt, yet almost nothing set here. (And yes, I know why.) I did find myself a mystery novel set there, but sadly it wasn’t written by a modern Yucatecan person (many of whom still speak Mayan.)
