Embarrassing

I have a problem with cutesy copy, particularly when it comes to error messages. I understand that they are trying to be friendly and personable, but it’s usually not what the user wants or needs. Often, a friendly error message just leads to more confusion.

Take Firefox’s “well, this is embarrassing”.

I was once asked for advice about this error message.

“Should I be embarrassed?”, I was asked.

You know what's even more helpful than posting a text post as a screenshot and then not including alt text?

When the text in the screenshot is dark purple on a dark gray or black background.

Why is this such a common color combination on Tumblr?

Fortunately, Tumblr also has a culture of people coming along and adding image descriptions to other people's posts.

Usability verschlechtert sich in letzter Zeit eher wieder, hat unser Autor beobachtet. Und: Er hat auch eine Lösung.

Good user experience does not necessarily need a user experience designer, but it needs people who care for user experience and the product's interface.

Many software teams in the 90s did not seem to have had formal designer or researcher roles, but developers who seem to have cared a lot for how users would interact with the software.

#UX #usability

Internal consistency of interfaces is curious: It makes software easier to use but it can not be easily tested for, since it is in no testable feature in particular. If you test with people who know your software, it has an effect, but it rarely can be isolated. Here, it makes a lot of sense to use expert reviews.

🐰 SECUSO Wishes You a Happy Easter! 🐣
This year, the Easter Bunny paid #SECUSO a visit and left behind eggs for us to paint—the creative results of our painting activity now adorn our hallway. In addition to traditional designs, we’ve also incorporated our research into our Easter decorations.
💪 After Easter, we’ll be kicking off the summer #semester. This semester, SECUSO will be offering the Applied Computer#Science – #Cybersecurity lecture for the Bachelor’s program as well as the #Security, #Usability, Society lab course (Bachelor’s and Master’s) and will be represented in the Economy and Hashtag#Technology team project. Additionally, some of us will present their work at the #Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (#CHI) in Barcelona the week after Easter. But first, we wish everyone a Happy Easter!

I have a lot of empathy for #GNOME users who struggle to figure out a way to do unattended graphical remote desktop to their own computers, as it silently refuses to work when the screen is locked or blanked.

There's an extension to work around that security limitation, but you have to know such a limitation exists to begin with.

Here I am suggesting an explanatory label in the GNOME Settings app to alleviate this for the foreseeable future: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/3716
