"Join us to explore seasonal signs of late spring with trees and shrubs leafing out and flowering. All activity in plants and animals speeds up with increases in sunlight intensity. We will examine some of the important interactions that benefit plants and animals with seasonal spring changes, as well as hints for tree identification.

This program will be led by experienced Reserve docent, naturalist and nature writer Eileen Willard, who spent 15 years as a University of New Hampshire lab instructor in dendrology (study of trees) and in 2022 completed her Maine Master Naturalist certification. Ages 12 and up."

Gorgeous blooms on a large & healthy Indian bean tree aka cigartree or Southern catalpa.

It prefers moist soil with full sun. It's easily raised from seeds which germinate early in the first season. It multiplies readily from cuttings. This tree is fairly free from fungal diseases & has few insect enemies. Which is why many landscapers love to add it.
The wood of these trees are brittle/hard, but doesn't rot easily; it's used for fence posts & railroad ties.

These trees are Black Poplars, possibly hybrids. Notice how they all have a large lower branch facing southwest. I’ve heard this might be a distinctive feature of native Black Poplars, not hybrids.

Can this single feature be enough to identify them as native?

Very rare to see these cultivated on the island. This was a delightful sight. It's quite large, with many #PurpleCones all over it.

#PiceaPurpurea aka #PurpleConeSpruce. It's a #spruce #tree native to #China. It's been cultivated here & is a beautiful tree for #landscaping.

Any ideas? I think it might be an ash.

Location is in zone 6b in western US.

Calling all you clever folk out there for some identification help.

We think this is a Wych Elm, or a hazel - but either way, we have never seen this coloration on either species before.

Thoughts?
