Old Man in the ShoeOnce again, I should never see this - ever. Deal with it, rotate, do whatever. There are no settings or fixes for me to even attempt. Last time I posted this someone said it just works, when I said it didn't.... they blocked me.

In general: To get Time Machine backups working from an Apple machine to a Linux server running Samba in a future-proof way, make sure you have Samba >= 4.22.6 installed and follow the guide at https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_Samba_to_Work_Better_with_Mac_OS_X to get it all working out of the box. It will also work with Samba > 4.5 and < 4.22 with the fruit:posix rename = yes option in /etc/samba/smb.conf, but that's an obsoleted approach.

thinkberg#TrueNAS is the worst experience I've had in a while. I simply can't get the #TimeMachine backups to work. Some obscure rights stuff is interfering and there is no good docs nor helpful logging available. I just can't believe setting up an #SMB share should be so complicated.

What could prevent #TimeMachine to create a backup disk image on a #truenas scale 25.10 where I set up the share following the instructions ? TM is complaining about a missing structure “file not found” apparently and leaves an .incomplete disk image bundle.
Stephen HoffmanIf you’re using macOS Time Machine to a NAS Time Machine server using Samba SMB services, beware Samba 4.22:
“As part of the backup TM tries to rename a directory while having an open file within the directory. Windows requires this to fail and this is what Samba also implements. There used to be a workaround for Macs by using fruit:posix_rename but that option was removed in 4.22 as it imposed an unreasonable development burden due to introducing hard to follow logic in very complex code. As part of implementing SMB3 UNIX Extensions in Samba, this part of the code has to be modified and this was only sensibly possible after removing the fruit:posix_rename code.
As an alternative, fruit shuld be extended to internally make macOS clients POSIX clients so they can benefit from the existing logic in Samba that allows such renames if all opens (recursively) are POSIX opens.
