Mal wieder am Backup rumgeschraubt.

Eine übrige SATA-SSD in ein "vernünftiges" USB-Gehäuse gebaut was nicht in die Ecke kotzt sobald man heavy i/o macht. Jetzt performantes Backup/Restore direkt auf die externe SSD und täglicher rsync von da auf das externe HDD-Array. Somit sauber getrennt vom internen Storage im Server.
So gefällt mir das.

Trying to restore from a #macOS #TimeMachine backup for my stolen work laptop that had 1TB disk to another laptop with 1TB disk. Buuuut the backup in Migration Assistant shows as 1.3TB.

I think this is due to use of Apple's new "container" system that doesn't play well with TM backups. Unfortunately TM is always an afterthought and MA is always a slow, buggy mess even in the best circumstances.

I hope I can get this thing restored before the long holiday weekend ends.

Today's book was H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. It's been over 20 years since I had read it last. I remembered most of the book pretty well. This was the first time I found it irritating. It felt verbose. Maybe it's my shorter attention span, or maybe it's that I knew the ending. Originally I was going to read The Invisible Man, but it was quickly annoying. I was hoping the book would be better than the movie version I tried to watch. It's barely better because the innkeeper woman mistook screaming as acting. That could turn anyone into a misogynist. I strongly don't recommend. #hgwells #TimeMachine #books

#TimeMachine on #macOS 26.5 still failed trying to back up to my Samba server.

The fix was to remove

fruit:time machine max size=…

from the share's smb configuration. As an alternative one can use tmutil to enforce a quota:

tmutil destinationinfo
sudo tmutil setquota [destination uuid] [quota-in-gb]
