I’ve been thinking about debut albums ever since talking about Alkaline Trio’s “Goddamnit” and I think this might be the only contender - at least in MY collection.

Similar to Alkaline Trio, Tiger Army comes out looking like the final product rather than the smallest Pokemon. Everything that makes Tiger Army great is here: fun songs, good production, FANTASTIC guitar tones, and a completed aesthetic.

I try not to get too wrapped up in the aesthetic of a band. That kind of stuff leads to scenes and scene people that are there for reasons other than music.

And yeah, the Tiger Army scene is annoying as hell. The psycho/rockabilly scene is like visiting Main Street at Disney: everyone is pretending they’re from a time that didn’t actually exist. Memory without guilt. Nostalgia not only for a time they weren’t there to experience but also one that never existed.

It’s all greased pomps and Betty Page lookalikes. It’s fucking boring and reeks of “I’m an individual just like everyone else here.”

Tiger Army - or rather singer/guitarist Nick 13 - BARELY belongs in it, too. You can tell he loves this music but he also experiments and matures in subsequent releases. He is not limiting himself to the same bullshit that the scene TA fostered into life does.

But the experimentation and maturing comes at a later date. Here we have psychobilly staples: Devil girls, spooky shit, murdering the woman who did you wrong, living as a criminal on the run, etc etc.

The content is not new, but TA’s energy and production still make it enjoyable and they only get better.

Also, TA is the only band that I actually care about record presentation. I want striped vinyl for all of their records and have been asking 1234Go! to release a new one annually so we could get a collection with this look as the base. If that sounds cool to you, send them an email.

And let me tell you: I can't think of another band that deserves such pretty records - that has such a cultivated image to go with their sound. I mean, who else can you think of? Genuine question.

Who is an act that warrants pretty records like this?

Nope. I genuinely can't think of another act that has cultivated an image so perfectly to match their sound - that is a complete package of sounds and visuals together. Especially when it comes to something like a tiger stripe motif in the vinyl.

I will say that I don't really think this is the best album that Tiger Army has come out with, but I could see the potential here. I think that Tiger Army should repress their albums in tiger stripes to match the aesthetics of the albums because Nick 13 OBVIOUSLY put a lot of thought into the whole album as a package both in sound and looks. Vinyl is a way to build on that.

Anyway. Tiger Army. A friend of mine asked if there was any act that I would want everything from. Nothing crazy like all variants because I would like to TRY to send my kids to college, but certainly one of each release.

"Alkaline Trio," I instantly replied. "And Tiger Army. Maybe Tool."

Since this conversation I have added The Kilograms because I really like their progressive stands and overall sound.

But my point is that Tiger Army was always on the short list and I'm glad to have this gorgeous example. Can't wait to get more!
