I'm actually considering moving towards more original stuff besides just covers and mashups all the time but I still also prefer doing piano covers at the moment.
I'm starting to want to share my older (and newer) mashups even less than I used to because it appears that too many people IME don't like seeing their favorite artists combined with someone they wouldn't consider "related".
I mean duh. IT'S A MASHUP. BY DEFINITION IT COMBINES TWO OR MORE DIFFERENT SONGS FROM DIFFERENT ARTISTS. That's to be expected.
For the record I like combining two unlike artists' songs regardless whether they have anything to do with each other or not. Like the "There I Ruined It" YouTube channel.
It's not a serious fan thing specialized on a few artists that happen to belong to one genre or community. I don't want to dedicate myself to any one thing.
The gatekeeping in the music community (especially in some genres like rock and hip hop) turns me off even if the intent is to prevent others, whether casual fans or corporates, from trivializing the true meaning of the original source of the music.
It actually makes me not want to mess with other people's music anymore.
(I'm having the same issue but with remixing music from various games and their overprotective/just plain judgy fans who approach things unconstructively, but that's a different story I don't want to go over too much as it's self-explanatory and my point still stands)
