In #TetOffensive 3 phases in 1968, North Vietnam army & Viet Cong attacked military & civilian sites across South Vietnam.

#USTerrorists retaliated with #MyLaiMassacre on 16 March 1968 - 504 civilians, mainly women & children, were gang-raped & mutilated. Those who helped the Vietnamese were seen as traitors. Only one of the US terrorists - William Calley, was tried. He was only sentenced to house arrest for 3.5 years for the atrocious war crimes. None of the other US terrorists were ever punished for participating in same atrocities on our peoples.

My big Auntie lived/worked in the tunnels for years, after quitting her nursing job & leaving our family for a decade. She worked mainly in the resistance army comms & also on their medical team. She was part of the organizational team that planned the #TetOffensive

North Vietnam & Viet Cong’s Tet Offensive in 1968 took South Vietnamese & #USATerrorists by surprise. Launched on Vietnam’s lunar new year holiday, it was one of the biggest military campaigns in the war.

Cu Chi Tunnels near Saigon was integral. The 121-kilometre-long network of subterranean tunnels, a larger network that cut across most of Vietnam, were Viet Cong’s lifeline.

Hidden under camouflaged booby traps, the tunnels provided our resistance fighters with supply/comms routes, living quarters & storage for food/weapons. Air and water were scarce, insects, scorpions, and rodents aplenty, it didn't deter them.

During the #TetOffensive, a VC captain, #NguyễnVănLém (an arms trafficker code-named #BảyLốp), was executed by South Vietnam's police chief #NguyễnNgọcLoan in Saigon on #ThisDayInHistory in 1968. It was recorded in a famed #EddieAdams photo that won a #PulitzerPrize in 1969.

The #TetOffensive, launched #ThisDayInHistory in 1968 by the #Vietnamese, was a tactical failure with a steep cost in lives. But it helped them win the war against the US by showing that resistance would continue, turning a growing share of the public against the #VietnamWar.

55 years ago today the dream died and the country was effectively lynched, not to recover for at least another 40 years. It was an awful spring and year too! Just awful, hard to put into words how our world was poisoned by the evil that was manifest everywhere in 1968.
